On a bit of a more general USA travel note, with the takeover of US Airways by American Airlines, it has been reported that US Airway's flights will get AA codes by early January so along with AA and BA flights having AA codes this will mean more trip possibilities for next summer on flight itineraries booked through AA.com.
interesting.
At the moment Aer Lingus are coming out best for me -- I can't see that they are in one of the Alliances, do they have a codeshare agreements with anyone ?0 -
Aerlingus partner with jetBlue and use the same terminal at JFK.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Sadly, my original plans have been abandoned as I couldn't get everything lined up as I wanted it.
I'm now looking at a more conventional Openjaw In to Boston and Out of New York. I'm really looking forward to exploring Boston & New England, less so NYC.0 -

We did a similar trip (albeit in reverse) back in 2012 - 6 nights in NY, 4 nights Southern Maine (Ogunquit) and 4 nights in Boston.
We really enjoyed this, even NYC that I, like yourself, wasn't particularly looking forward to.
We drove up to Maine, but instead of renting a car from NY, we opted to get the MTA North train from Grand Central to Stamford (CT - cost $9 each) where we picked up a Hertz car (from opposite the station) to drive up to Ogunquit, then dropped the car off in Boston. May be worth considering something similar (i.e. drop the car off at Stamford) for yourselves if you want to avoid driving in NY.
Ogunquit was fantastic - a small seaside resort, very few (if any) of the chain-type hotels/restaurants, a fantastic beach and generally a great place to unwind after the hectic pace in NY.
In Boston, we used the Go-Select card from Smart Destinations where you can choose the attractions to visit and still benefit from savings - we visited the NE Aquarium, the Prudential Skywalk, the Science Museum (spent a full day there!!) and the DUK tour around Boston.
The main difference is that we then had to drive back to JFK for our return flight (due to Avios availability). However, we did use the daytime flight (left JFK around 08:40, arrived LHR 19:00-ish) which meant we didn't suffer with jet-lag at all and were still very much able to drive back up to the North West. Fairly sure BA also have a daytime BOS-LHR flight that could be worth considering for yourself.
Coincidentally, we were also considering a Canada+New England holiday in 2015, but the cost of car rental between Canada and Boston was prohibitive so we will probably spend all the time in Canada working our way down from Quebec to Toronto.0 -
Hurray. I've booked the flights and now its time to 'fill in the blanks'.
Ogunquit is on the list !0 -
There is a downloadable pdf visitor guide for Ogunquit available at http://www.ogunquit.org/guidebook.php - enjoy!!0

We did megabus NYC to Boston $1pp.
Do NY without the car and rent in Boston before/after you have done the city center, parking is a nightmare and expensive.
edit: looks like $3 is the cheapest now.0 -
If the junior Cats are going with you make sure your research includes the family friendly Ogunquit.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

a second suggestion for Ogunquit !
Step 1 is going to be seeing if Boston & NYC are merely arrive & departure points.
I've got a very strong suspicion that the rest of the Cats would like to explore NYC, rather than just boarding a plane at JFK !:D.
I'm hoping that we'll be taking advantage of some B&B's/short term rentals in New England, rather than relying on hotels.0
