One way car hire Boston - Toronto ?

Is is possible to do a one way car hire from Boston to Toronto, without paying through the nose.
OR, has anyone explored hire car from BOS to (say) Buffalo, then taking the Amtrak across the border and picking up a hire car in Canadia.
I'm at the early stage of planning and I quite fancy the idea of exploring New England, travelling through New York (we're not big , Big city fans) and then carrying on to Toronto.

Hi
We're pretty frequent travellers to both US and Canada and the only cross border trips we have managed have been picking up the hire car on the Canadian side and crossing into US although we have always needed to return the car to Canada too.
We have never been able to find a company which allowed US rental cars to cross into Canada let alone be dropped off there so I'll be interested to see if anyone can offer you a solution.
I think your best bet may be dropping off, crossing and then picking up another. If one of the rental firms had depots on the border you could cross at Niagara Falls and literally walk across the bridge and through border control (although with luggage I suspect a cab would be a better option;))0 -
We picked up a car this summer from Alamo in Boston and drove to Canada, Montreal and Toronto and backed to Philadelphia where we dropped it off. There was no problem but we did have to pay $150 extra for dropping off at different location.0

I've driven from Boston to Toronto and back in a hire car before. Hire companies are usually fine with you taking the car across the border as long as you tell them in advance and there may be additional insurance charges.
I'd imagine that even if you found a company which would allow a one way hire the cost would be extortionate.0 -
hmm, its sounding increasingly like my initial idea is a non starter.
Maybe collect hire car in Boston, mosie across to (say) Buffalo, drop hire car, take Amtrak to Toronto, collect Hire Car might work.
Doing things that way could work nicely0 -

Sounds a bit more interesting, what month is the trip likely to be?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -

I tried looking at this last year(for Oct) and did not find anything but some US people did but I never followed it up to find out who they booked with.
I think it may be worth asking on a US travel site.0 -
Just a warning, Toronto can be very humid in July, I survived but I wouldn't do it again, much better early summer or autumn0

Cheers Alan
I hadn't really considered humidity as a selection factor!
I try and do something a little bit different each year and New England into Canada seemed to fit the bill0 -
On a bit of a more general USA travel note, with the takeover of US Airways by American Airlines, it has been reported that US Airway's flights will get AA codes by early January so along with AA and BA flights having AA codes this will mean more trip possibilities for next summer on flight itineraries booked through AA.com.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0
