I have a relative who works as a vounteer at a local charity shop - possibly up to 15 hours per week. I believe the Manager gets over £30k. Barnardos also pay obscene wages to their Managers and also allow them to go to high profile functions at least once a week - all expenses paid of course.

There are also the radio stations such as Downtown's "Cash for Kids," this seems to be more about DJ's on an ego trip.

Gosh I never knew this and I worked for them for many years .:rotfl:

I knew about this. It's one of the things which puts me off many mainstream charities. I know the arguments, people have to be paid a good salary to attract the right ones into working for the charity but it still sickens me as, probably like you and many others, I think someone should be involved with a charity because of their passion for it.

Management do deserve a wage but not the type of top flight wages being paid in some of these cases.

It gets worse I was back up at lunch and he was playing the same tune equally badly. Someone outside of Burger King was murdering "Oh When the Saints" on the flute and to top it off someone else in Donegal square with an accordion was playing endless renditions of "Jingle Bells," this guy also had the violin trumpet contraption.

Just remembered there was someone with a guitar too but he was just shaking a cup for money and wasn't even pretending to play.

Haven't seen they guy with the never finished titanic painting in years, he always had that one wee patch to finish :D

The other week a South Irish middle aged man stopped me same place asking for money for the bus. He got a "No!"

How funny...I also had a southern irish middle aged man ask me for money for his bus about a month ago. I just looked at him in amazement and said "NO" . I remember thinking at the time "what a lunatic, whats he doing in Belfast without enough money to get his bus home" - just shows its all just a story.

I discovered a couple of years ago that there are quite a few ROI drug dependent men of middle age in Northern Ireland. Their craving for drugs makes them do things you wouldn't ordinarily find acceptable.

The buskers are getting in the spirit by playing out of tune but in Santa costumes.

Yes, that does seem to be something they do. They consider Belfast a softer target than their traditional hunting grounds in Dublin. From what I've been told the underbelly of Dublin is something we shouldn't aspire to have here in the North, no matter how bad things seem to be for us. My own socialising in Dublin has been restricted to the city centre with my own crowd, mostly hotel based, so I wouldn't be able to corroborate anything personally.

I'm familiar enough with O'Connell Street. I usually stay at the Gresham. I have to say I've seen nothing worse than drunkenness, including my own. The again, I'm pretty naive when it comes to drugs. I know nothing about them and I'd find it hard to know if somebody was on them. A bit of a gap in my adult education there. :o
