Fastest way to make kindling

Just wondering if anyone had an outside the box solution for chopping kindling quickly. Other than a hatchet, I have tried fixing an old axe head into a work bench and whacked the kindling into it with a hammer. This is quite quick but Im interested if anyone else has an idea or method that they want to share?
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

  • Nothing special about the way I prepare the kindling wood - I use a splitting axe with a longish handle - but can be awkward and time-consuming sometimes: however, as I'm in Sweden and the winter temperatures are anything up to -30 degrees, you need the exercise

Other than that, a walk in the woods should provide the opportunity to collect up fallen twigs, small branches (etc) and if they're allowed to dry thoroughly, these make perfect kindling (and reduces the labour on wood splitting)

When I do my kindling I use old pallet wood I cut to manageable sizes then I just split it down with a small axe I do use a old wood stump. I wont be doing this much more as its harder now to get pallets and also dont like it messing my car up so probably buy kindling at a saw mill in future

    Hi,
Best tool for making kindling is a froe or frow.

  • I save all my prunings stacked into covered old dustbins [from freecycle], chop it into kindling sized pieces and let it season all summer. It only takes a few pieces plus some paper to get my burner going, and then the bigger stuff which is kept in the shed. I just bought a new axe this weekend as it happens, and am busy chopping wood this afternoon. Love it.

    Kindling for years here now.
  • +1 for billhook. Much better balanced for rapid-fire chopping than a hatchet! I only use pallets [free] for the fire, so always have plenty of kindling material. Takes about 10 minutes chopping for a month's supply, and like everything else involved with woodburning, is very satisfying in a 'find your inner caveman' way.
