well , i popped home at lunch and the builder has rather nicely i must say , recessed most of the new pipework ,along with this , so it only protrudes a small way out under my new cabinet , so i still have it at least , should i require for any reason

Apparently , he found out that this item can be used to detect leaks between the mains outside and with the house

Are you sure that your external meter doesn't feed two properties?
In which case, you are paying for both.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes , each property has its own meter under a manhole at the end of its path BUT i see what your saying , my payments though are doing well over usage based on readings i take often , so i think if two properties were being banded under 1 meter i wouldnt be paying enough.....?

You could always check by turning off the water at the external water meter, and see if it affects any neighbours.

Would be worth taking readings from both meters to compare. Very useful to check if any external leaks as your builder noted - our water meter is at the end of a shared drive, and the pipework runs about 60m to our kitchen, and I was planning to install a check meter inside to check for leaks.

Ha Ha, the meter can detect leaks outside???? Its a old internal meter fitted by the prior owners or the water company before they started fitting meters outside.

All you need to do to find if you have a leak outside is turn off your internal stop tap, and listen and see if you can hear it hissing, or just watch the external meter turning.

I would assume , what is meant by detecting leaks , is to be able to compare the readings on both meters at each point to identify wastage somewhere between them
