My mum works for a preschool...last christmas over half the kids they sent Christmas cards to reported that the envelope had been cut open and the chocolate coins inside removed.

More accountability has to be enforced within the RM.

You realise that was probably the sorting machine as well! When items with lumps in them go through (when they shouldn't) the machine will often extract the lumpy items, usually pens etc.

The Royal Mail is the bane of my life at the moment!

I've had compensation twice in the last 3 weeks because of things that were sent by Special Next Day Delivery, not getting there until a week later. Both things were important and that was stressed to the counter staff at time of posting.

The items had simply been left lying on the counter for days before being picked up by the postie.

I've had things go missing that were expected and things arrive badly damaged. Today's mess up was a box of labels from Amazon that arrived in a box that was saturated (actually dripping) with what looked like oil. The postie had just bagged the box and handed it over with not much said.

Never a week goes by without at least one issue. Most posties are good but standards have slipped all round generally I think.

I used to have trouble in the past with the Royal Mail leaving things on the door step, thus because my front door is only 8 feet away from the street, getting them nicked.

After creating one of the biggest stinks possible with eveyone I could in the local sorting office and via their complaint line, RM stopped doing this.

I also think they would be very afraid of opening any of my mail now. ;)

(Saying that my current postie is an excellant guy, wish he could stay for ever!!!) :D

We have a really great post lady who delivers here. Sometimes envelopes a bit chewed up - our new letter box I have found to be a fit fierce! Have tried to make it a bit more post friendly but to no avail. When substitute postie mail is left just hanging inside post flap but regular lady always makes sure everything put through safely.

Only problem we have had when rather stupidly my mother bought two birthday cards in a shop, inserted money as gifts and the 'kind' lady behind counter offered to post. Suffice to say neither card arrived. Although my mother complained, no blame or proof could be apprortioned to shop lady or RM. I think I know where blame did lie and on that occasion pretty sure not RM!

Moral of story, no matter how small an amount you are sending, send a cheque if at all possible. I know cheques going out of fashion (I hadly use my cheque book these days) but they still have their place.

I work in a Post Office and hear lots of complaints about the postal service (and, would you believe it,some praise too!!).

I would never condone any postal worker tampering with or stealing mail. They need to be rooted out and dealt with through the Courts, not only to protect our customers, but also to protect the vast majority of their honest and reliable colleagues.

But I have to say that customers could help themsleves more.NEVER put cash in the ordinary mail system - use Special Delivery.By and large this is an excellent service and I hear of very few failures with SD.

Please, please address your mail correctly and use the postcode.Make sure your letter/packet is sealed properly and get it weighed if you are not sure of the correct postage. All Post Offices have scales and measuring templates available to the public (or should have!) and pricing booklets.

Advise the Counter staff if your item is urgent, valuable,or needs to be signed for.The number of times I have had people ask for 'a first class stamp please' and on enquiring I have found they are sending cash or items of value.Post Office staff are not mindreaders.

Post Office/Royal Mail are not perfect, but most of us do our best. However,if you have genuinely received poor service,do make an official complaint (and I don't mean yell at the poor postie or Counter clerk - gets you nowhere.)

my OH received a parcel yesterday with a birthday gift from his daughter one day after it should have arrived.

The parcel had been sealed up extremely well by the sender with tape, yet when we received it one of the ends had obviously been opened up as the tape had been sliced open.

This comes a few months after a letter with Euros in it (yes I did warn him not to do it) arrived minus the Euros

It could well be that they are testing such parcels for terrorist related products. Whos knows!

All I know is that RM may well be striking soon. That would mean that people wont have their parcels, letters tampered with until the strike is over.

But then again the same posters will whinge and moan and whinge and moan about that too.
  • Did anyone post a special delivery parcel or letter yesterday. And did it arrive today? (Yeah I know there is a strike on but if someone paid for next day they should have it (unless RM likes getting sued), maybe RM were smart enough not to have that service running yesterday so they dont have to pay out claims.
