BA Flight Cancellation JFK - LHR

Hi all,
Just after some advice, I have read up on quite a few threads here, but just wanted to see if anyone had any advice/answers.
Our flight was cancelled on 6/12/13 - we had already online check in, and then got a text saying our flight was cancelled - and we were re-booked on a flight the next day (12 hours later). Apparently all inbound /outbound flights in the UK at that time were cancelled - air traffic control problem http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25278163. We couldn't speak to anyone on the phone, so just re-booked ourselves back in to our hotel, have kept all receipts.
Question is, whilst I'm pretty sure we can claim our expenses back, can we claim for compensation as this was not BA's fault???
Thanks everyone

I would be pretty sure that you stand no chance of successfully claiming compensation as it is extraordinary circumstances completely outside their control since it was an ATC issue.0
