John Lewis Duvet

Hi
I bought an expensive (£500+) duvet from John Lewis, 4 years ago.
It has recently developed large tears on it, not from any misuse either!
I'm wondering if I'd have any chance of a replacement based on the "reasonable time" part of the SOG act?
I'd have expected a duvet of this price to last a lifetime.

After this period of time, in fact after six months, the seller is entitled to ask you to prove that the damage is due to an inherent fault. I.e. it wasn't caused by misuse or fair wear and tear, etc.

John Lewis are usually pretty good with these things, but you may not get a replacement after this time even if the fault is deemed inherent.

Once a fault is deemed inherent the seller must provide a remedy which could be either a repair or replacement or refund.
You can choose the remedy, but you cannot force the seller to provide a disproportionate one.
So effectively the seller chooses the cheapest remedy without causing you significant inconvenience.

Speak to JL and see what they say.

Thanks for your advice. I realise it's probably a long shot, but as mentioned before I really would have thought we'd get more life out of such an expensive item.

Oh, don't get me wrong... I agree with you.

If for discussion purposes we say the life of the duvet is ten years. As you have had four years use of it, a refund of 60% of the purchase price might be reasonable and may be a cheaper remedy for JL.

It's probably best to keep in mind that you have had four years usage of it.

I'd had Hodgkins Lymphoma and had received a critical illness payout, so treated my wife and I. It's a wonderful duvet apart from the recent rips!

im not criticising why you got it OP sounds like you deserve it, didn't realise you could get duvets so expensive

I didn't take it as criticism, I felt I should point out why I'd spent so much money on a duvet!
