After watching "The Gadget Show" I was going to buy my friend a SKY Now box (£10) as a Christmas present so he could use it to catch up on the iPlayer & Channel 4 On demand (no films or subscription products) and it is £30 cheaper than the ROKU (its the same thing).
With the ROKU you hand over your cash and that's it. With the Now box you can only buy it with a CC or DD. I contacted Sky Customer Service who said that it is nothing to do with them, but it has Sky on the product and when you buy it you are taken to the SKY secure website.
You can only contact NOW on line and as I read it if I bought it for my friend my DD card details would be attached to the account of the product for "we need to retain this information for audit and fraud prevention purposes." and their website shows complaints about unauthorized money being taken from peoples accounts hence another reason why I wanted to remove my CC details. Has anyone else come across this?

It's a subscription service which also has free content in it. They attach a card to your account to enable you to buy the sports movie and entertainment packages at the click of a button.
I don't believe they take unauthorised money out of your account. I believe people accidentally order products and then complain afterwards. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Roku make the "Sky Now" box in conjunction with Sky and sell it at cost price. This is because they are not interested in making a profit from the box - they want you to buy passes to various Sky services such as sports and movies. It has several services disabled to help reduce competition.
If you're not interested in Sky, then a better box would be the plain old Roku - they make a profit from the sale of the hardware, and don't care after that.0 -

You need a card to buy the box (via NOW) and subscribe (even for the FREE month)
You could buy the box (with a bundle) with cash from a retailer but guess you would need a card to register for the service.0 -

You can buy them with clubcard points if you want.
However, you need to create an account before the box is usable, and creating an account requires payment details. You have to create the account on a PC or tablet.0 -

I tried removing my credit card details the other day as I was trying to work out if various parts of the platform were chargeable or not - I didn't want to be unwittingly charged by clicking on something that would set off a subscription. I didn't manage to remove the details unfortunately.
If you buy the box you can log out, and then your friend would need to set up their own account (with their own cc/dc details) and sign in as themselves. Would that be an option?0 -
I know you have to put your card details in, but I thought you did this the first time you set up the box - not when you purchased it. I purchased it on a different card than I would use for the set up, can I change it?
Also I am assuming it has some sort of parental control to stops kids purchasing without parents permission.0 -
Hey all,
The simple answer is that you can either buy it from one of the stores like Currys, Argos, John Lewis, Tesco....and this doesn't matter if its cash or card, as you then gift the box to your friend and when they first start up the box they will be prompted to go to NOW TV to setup an account. Just buying the box from the retailer doesn't create an account on NOW TV.
If you buy online then you can still gift the box, as the box is sent out at manufacturers default and won't be linked to any account you may setup. Again when your friend setups they will have to create or enter their account details.0
