No!!!
Credit note, I buy things off amazon all the time, but it really is the principle here.
If they don't/won't/can't (I have no idea what the problem was as the vendor hasn't responded) then they shouldn't keep my money!

That is illegal surely. When I've asked for refunds on returning goods they usually ask me if I want an instant refund via gift card or wait to receive a debit card refund. It's very cheeky that they haven't offered you an option.
