Cancelling orange moving overseas best deal

Just after any advice, I have an Iphone4s on Orange the contract is up on 7 March 2014, I going out to work in South Sudan mid to late January.

Firstly I intend to cancel my contract, I am looking at a free sim deal (ovivo?) or would I be best getting a sim in Africa, I want to usr=e the phone for my aps and music I have viber etc for wifi calls.

Anyone got any suggestions for me. To cancel Orange on 20 January is £51, I could go PAYG and keep my number but I need 30 days to this with Orange and my time frames are collapsing.

Any advice greatly apreciated (I am paying £40 a month at the moment.

Just call them, pay the early termination fee and ask them to switch you to PAYG at the 7th of Jan. Request confiramtion in writing or by a e-mail. Make sure that someone gets the final bill after the 7th and there are no extra charges overhanging.
If you want to keep your number make sure you make a short call at least once every 6 months.

For roaming in general and data roaming in particular a local sim is usually the best option.

Definitely get a local SIM card in South Sudan; it should be quite cheap. Here's a list, although you'll have to Google their web sites:

MTN is one of the two largest South African networks which also operates in many emerging markets including South Sudan.

    Thats great thanks.
  • If you haven't already done so, it will be much easier to get your phone unlocked by Orange now.

Well, legally, Orange are the only way to get it unlocked, although from now to mid Jan ain't very long by Orange standards!

Don't hold your breath and be prepared to the worst.
Orange are notorious for dragging their feet and taking ages to unlock iPhones in spite of their promises.

Very true. Orange charges an unreasonable £20 fee to unlock phones, even after the subsidy of the phone has been paid off in full. If the European Commission gets its way, such fees will be outlawed by Article 28(2) of this draft directive. Even before this directive is enacted, when Orange takes more than 30 days, you can demand a refund of the fee in respect of Orange's breach of Regulation 19 of the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.
  • Orange have sent me the unlocking info that has been done my phone is now unlocked. To be fair to orange other than the £20 charge they have been efficient
