Not crazy; you have complex and unexpected journey requirements, in a bit of a stranded corner.

And very disparate requirements from a car. :(.

Our road was flooded at the end that usually floods this morning, and hatchbacks were turning rather than braving (sensibly). But I'm feeling so good I really do intend to start having more of a social life this year. I want a car I know can get me places. Do I really fancy driving back and forth from London in a defender :(. But the alternative, practically, would be an older car than we could get for same money as a newer defender, as the one we have now isn't gutsy enough, so we'd need a weightier four by four, and I prefer a swb and the guiltless parking of a defender so that If som e one prangs or scrapes me its not me left crying over bodywork and length wise I can still get into squeezed spaces. (When I was you g and slim I've been known to get out of the rear door in a tight space :o)
  • Lydia, the younger of my two younger sisters has been veggie since she was 9, and she's now 29. She's revolting healthy, slim, fit and energetic. My mother (being a cooking artist, and a perfectionist to boot) did a lot of research into cooking for teenage vegetarians, and it's definitely possible to eat a very healthy and balanced diet without any meat or fish or chicken, and it'll be a lot easier for your DS given that he eats fish with such enthusiasm and chicken, too.

Nuts and eggs are important, as is balancing proteins - there are things such as lentils which have lots of important proteins and other things in, but which are much better if combined with other veggie things to release them or something - I gather that lentils, rice and peas together are much better for nutrients than those things separately.

The other great thing about lentils, is they are much easier than they were in the past.

Merchant gourmand do little plastic pouches which go in the microwave of black lentils. (I know because you can also heat them on the hob if you are microwave phobic and want a lentil lunch for one).

Cans of lentils are better when the whole family are eating them :) but also avoid thinking ahead, and some lentils don't need pre soaking.

Edit...that's meant to be merchant gourmet isn't it? Ooops! Freudian perhaps!
  • Most lentils don't - red, green, puy lentils are all non-soaking, and all can be cooked in under half an hour.

I've actually changed my mind on lentils. I used to think they were for weird types; the kind of people who think that their pet dog has been reincarnated as a chicken. But I've actually come to appreciate that they are tasty, if cooked right, and you don't have to faff about any more. Just bung in a tin.

Or you can batch cook ahead, then freeze in portions for quick reheating as if from a can.

Lentils are delicious! They make a fabulous hot dish or salad. And .....brilliant with roast birds for those of us who like meat.

We had lentils for new year, even though I' m not meant to. Thinks like lentils are really hard to give up tbh.

    Yes.

One of the things Lydia finds hard though, is planning ahead for meals, its just where her amazing ability to try and do everything for everyone comes to the end of its line.
    And fair enough.

So long as she gets herself and the kids fed healthily. Normally I'm a huge fan of this sort of thing, but just like me trying to convince you cooking for one is fun, there is no point (and in probably damage) to be done if I push the meal planning line to Lydia :D

She's brilliant, and she and her brilliant son will get a handle on the 80 percent of it they need to to make a decent job of it I reckon:D

We're considering buying a new car BEFORE this one dies.

    This is a radical move.

    Crazy even?
DH was considering buying a new car later this year.
Then he decided to drive through a puddle on Thursday evening. The car didn't like it and died.
We are awaiting the insurance assessor to see if it is terminal (it's a diesel, so apparently less tolerant of water in the engine than a petrol one would be).
DH had spent some time over Christmas reminding DS not to drive in puddles. DS gamely went out on Thurs night to help push the car clear of the puddle, and he held his tongue.
I have been a very good NP and not told DH what I really think.

I always thought it was the other way around? When I had my first LR engine swapped ( first cause of death, oil leak....) I could only get a petrol engine and all my farmer friends were telling me I was a fool and puddles and fords would be a problem? (I've never had a problem in floods in LR's with either engine, and been through several where others turn.....) :o
