We Need a New Boiler But....

Options
Our credit rating is poor, as we've just come out of a debt management plan, so doubt we'll be accepted for a loan or even a credit card to get a new boiler.

British Gas came out last night a quoted us £3.5k for a new Bosch Worcester boiler fitted.

I said no, as that price was (IS) way over the top!

But, I'm having second thoughts now... (weather's turning cold)

Unless, does anyone know of any other options...??

Well for a start get a realistic quote from a reputable local gas safe engineer, British Gas are notorious for being massively overpriced.

We paid £1600 for a new Viessmann combi boiler, including locating 2 mtrs from the original location, by a local gas safe installer, BG quoted us almost £3000 for a similar boiler and installation.
  • We've been quoted it should only be around £2-£2.5k by independent fitters.

Our problem is raising the cash to pay an independent, rather than getting finance etc with BG and having a credit search done which will show up our history...

That's about right, BG will typically be 39% more for a new install (Which survey result). If you can't get a bank or personal loan, then what makes you think that BG are going to offer you finance at a reasonable rate?
What's wrong with the old boiler? If it's BG who say you need a new one, then get a second opinion from a local independent GSR RGI.

Has your boiler actually died on you?
  • OH thinks we'll get finance, even if it is a high APR, not as high as a 'bad credit' credit card / loan though?

Anyway, does anyone have experience of the 'one off fix it' thing they run?

Our boiler hasn't actually 'died' (yet). It just has difficulty getting going, ignites fine but thinks it hasn't and won't switch between HW and CH.
It looks like an electrical (PCB) problem not mechanical.
  • I've recently had blurb from everlasting boilers who are part of 'a shade greener'. Worth looking at as there is no up front cost. It is more like a service plan for life with the boiler thrown in. From £19 per month. Was meaning to look into it myself. I prefer paying 4 things outright, but at that rate it would take 10 years before I'd paid out 2500. Possibly worth a look.

If you would buy a service plan anyway, and really don't have the spare cash to pay out then Everlasting is/can be a good idea. You get a new boiler and 24 hour call out for the monthly cost. Worth a look.
  • Get it checked out by a GSRi and try and find one who knows his diagnostics. Don't just say its the PCB, I've lost count of the people I've seen who've been told its the PCB and when I check it its a thermistor costing £15 + Labour.
Its not over til the fat lady sings. Sorry to any fat ladies.
  • Just read a 5 page 'oldish' thread on MSE by doing a google search.

    Looks like a way forward...

But can anyone update the situation please?

Some say ya, some say stay away, you'll pay over the odds.

But how? It's ONE monthly payment for EVERYTHING - servicing / repairs etc.
