It all depends on location location location.
If you've ordered something, which is from a seller based in Derbyshire and you're based in Derbyshire then it should be pretty quick. But obviously if it's coming from Scotland or the East Coast then it might be longer because of the weather.
Oddly, the slowest one I've had was going about a mile and a half.

Its been like this since privatisation.

First class arriving quickly is no-longer the norm.

Expect parcels flying over your gate any time soon.

May aswell tick 'other courier' now when using Royal Mail.

I've never noticed quite so many slow items quite so soon as this year. I do have a few years experience to look on. I'm also sending less RM items than I did this time last year.

packet volumes have increased earlier this year

I sent an item 2nd class last Monday (they paid Sunday). Today they opened a case one minute and within the next minute gave me a negative as the item has not arrived, giving me no chance to respond or offer a solution.
Apparently "my wife is doing my head in as item not arrived, I want a refund now"
If this is how its going to be over the next few weeks I might shut my shop now.

I had 2 INR cases opened today, items are not terribly late yet - around a week since posting only, but I guess people want them for Christmas, or want the refund to buy a replacement.
I am sending everything out 1st class from today.
Fingers crossed things start turning up!
