tipping the home delivery driver

  • I'm a delivery driver. No we aren't supposed to take tips.

But it gets difficult especially with the elderly. They like to tip for good service, which I always give "where do you want your bottles of water in that cupboard?"

So far do you do? Take tip as they won't get upset. Or refuse and get a complaint?

I actually put my tips in my charity box at home

it would be a bit of a strange complaint for someone to make, this person that was willing to give you money for good service suddenly turns around and rings up to complaint when you politely explain you are not allowed to accept tips ;) I doubt such a person exists, and if they did, what manager would take such a complaint seriously.

    Oh trust me. They exist.

I had one customer who wanted to make me a got drink last winter. Very thoughtful it was freezing! However I had to turn down as I have a job to do so she insisted I took a few pounds and buy a takeaway one. I tried to refuse but she wouldn't have it.

She actually phoned the store to double check! I got "half told off" for accepting the money but my manager agreed I didn't have a choice.

Instead of tips offer the driver a drink or snack. Those hot sausage rolls you just made will put a smile on their face. Most drivers carry a hot flask, maybe offer a refill. If you feel what they have done needs rewarding that's a good way.
Another way is to make sure you got the driver name and let customer services know.
