The European Commission has launched legal proceedings against the UK for failing to deal with air pollution.

The EU says that levels of nitrogen dioxide, mainly from diesel engines, are "excessive" in many British cities. The Commission says that this gas can lead to major respiratory illnesses and premature deaths. Britain was supposed to meet EU limits by 2010, but the government admits that London won't achieve this standard until 2025.

The UK's problem with dirty air stems from the EU's air pollution directive, which came into force in 2008. It set limits on the the levels of air-borne contaminants, including particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, gases that are produced from the burning of fossil fuels

What might have tipped the EU's hand was a ruling by the UK Supreme Court last year. In a case brought by environmental campaigners ClientEarth, the judges agreed that the government was in breach of an obligation to reduce air pollution.

It's a bit silly some of it.

If you have a defective cat on a diesel that does nothing for emmisions and doesn't change how the car runs and goes for an MOT it won't matter if it works or not. Just needs to be fitted.

If you remove the defective cat that is doing nothing then it becomes a failure

    "Ghost cat" in place now.

Hopefully authentic enough looking not to have any issues

Be sure to report back after the MOT, Retrogamer.

    Good luck.

It should pass - this year - but I feel that tighter rules are in the pipeline for the future.

You are killing the planet, you will make all the bird fall from the trees, we will all freeze/fry/suffocate because of you. Hope they catch you and throw away the key.

There we are Cepheus, I've saved you all those keystrokes and self-righteous indignation.

DPFs certainly remove the fun from driving - I'd miss the ability to be able to turn a tailgating nice shiny white Audi/BMW to grey with my epic clouds of smog on hard acceleration (thanks to a very harsh map and other bits and pieces).

They usually get the message quite quickly... :p

I'll need to check when MOT is due this year but not too long in the future.
Hopefully no problems come MOT time but we'll see.

I've heard rumours of even stricter things appearing in the MOT's over the next 10 years which will make most cars fail if they're modified at all. This was from someone who works for VOSA so we'll see what happens.

That's the madness of it all.
My cat done nothing at all. It had 8 years worth of soot coated to it.
Removing it has made the enginemore responsive and now i don't get any black smoke at all out the back (got some before cat removal)

At the moment the VOSA and the DSA are in a power struggle as to who gets which desk in the newly amalgamated DVSA.

All set to take effect from April this year.

So the VOSA at the moment doesn't know it's !!! from it's elbow.

The general trend in the long term is to bring the UK into line with the rest of the EU - but we are not alone - several other countries need to tweek their tests too.

The final objective as I understand it is that a test done anywhere in the EU will be valid anywhere in the EU.

By that I mean that a UK registered car could be tested in France or Croatia rather than having to book a test as soon as you get off the ferry in Dover.

And that a car only needs testing every 2 years.

Commercial vehicles stay with yearly tests.

Plus we will have MOTs for tractors and other agricultural vehicles.

And tests and separate registration for trailers.

We already have legislation 28 Oct 2012) that means it's well nigh impossible to legally build your own trailer.

Seeing some of the attempts at home-builds, tests are probably a good thing.

With the possibility of Scotland leaving the UK and the UK leaving Europe in the next elections i wonder how this will affect the Euro regs and syncing up all the testing methods.
