Hy,
We get the keys tomorrow for our first house. I was making a list of important things to do when we move in. Nobody has lived there for 4 months. So im guessing check the gas, electricity, change locks, give a good clean, change all the bills over.
Was hoping for other ideas from people.
Thanks

I got up at 5am the first morning in my new house and put my record collection back into alphabetical order. Got my priorities right!
Good luck for tomorrow!0 -
+1 for being sure where water, gas, elec, phone & TV all come in.
Some feel champagne is a splendid 'new home' tradtition, you may prefer a G&T, or a mug of oolong - either way, a refreshing beverage appears to be an important ritual.
Not least as you will be expected to provide these & so you may as well figure where the kettle, fridge, lemon slices & source of ice cubes etc will be.
All the every best!0 -

Assuming OP means moving-in day, I'd say get your bed made up early on so that the end of the day you can just crash into it, rather than faffing about late at night.
Make sure you have lots of cleaning products, if it's lain empty for a long time...0 -
Vow never to store stuff in the loft unless it's a proper, accessible room. Otherwise, the only time it will ever come out is when you next move, and check it all in a skip. So cut out the middle stage and bin, sell or 'freecycle' it (he says, speaking from experience of having to clear not only his own - but other peoples' crud out of three lofts!).
And congratulations on the new home0 -

Check it works.
Then make sure the heating works and get the place warmed up and some hot water.
Meter readings etc.
Council tax.
TV licence
(These should have been checked as part of the pre purchase list)
Check all windows and doors for operation and security
(probably need cleaning as well(makes the place brighter)
Consider changing all locks if the whereabouts of all keys is unknown.
If been empty for some time move in as little as possible or into a small a space so you can do any refurb, cleaning, checking etc. without loads of furniture in the way.
Wait before buying anything to get a feel for the spaces,
get onto the local freecycle group for stuff, you can always buy new later and look for sales/bargains etc.
Get the local takeaway menus, taxi numbers, bus timetable, local tradesmen, know where Wicks, screwfix, etc are in case you need stuff quickly.
If first home get a basic tool kit if you don't have one already.
Check when the bin men come and any recycling policies.
As above Avoid using the loft for "storage" use it for long term stuff like original packaging for future moves/selling stuff.0 -
Meter readings without doubt. Then go and explore what is in the loft? I found a singer sewing machine in mine and a load of power tools (albeit about 10-15 years old).I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. We moved in on Tuesday - what I've learnt this week is to check that the drains aren't blocked before putting on your washing machine for the first time, otherwise you will flood the kitchen
Our property had been empty for 18 months, so the first thing we did was to put the heating on in all rooms as it was absolutely freezing!Value of prizes 2010 - 2017: £8374 Wins 2022: Magic set
