    Hi all
Just wondering if anyone could advise me as I've been told by british gas that my boiler is broken as I have the wrong pipes to the radiators. I've been told I need to change the pipes from 15mm to 22mm for all the pipe connections from my boiler to the radiators. ...
As others have said, they are extracting the urine.

Our 2004 build 4 bed house has 12 radiators and manages just fine with 10mm plastic pipe (like 27col above) to all the radiators. The house warms up very quickly from cold and is easy to keep warm even in the coldest weather.

I can't see how a boiler would break just because of the pipework. They have safety mechanisms to cope with excessive heat etc.

Get some other quotes and don't let BG or anyone else con you into spending money unnecessarily.

I'm no plumbing expert but, as far as I know, copper pipes don't wear out and it should be straightforward to keep the installed copper pipe and use adapters to convert from 15mm pipe to whatever is required if you ever need to install a new boiler, new pump or new radiators.

..please help with advice as I have no hot water and am freezing!:(

What is the actual problem? It could be something as simple as a stuck or failed distribution valve.
  • BG having a bubble for sure.

I had a mid-terrace which used 22 just to/from the boiler and around the 3-way and the loop to the HW tank, then it was reduced to 15mm for the run to the rads. That was described to me as 'not ideal' but it worked for the 20+ years I lived there!

What's up with the boiler? If it's an old skool open-flue, pilot light ignition job you can generally fix them with just a hammer ;)
  • We've just had a quote from BG for a new boiler, £3.5k!!!

They are wanting to put a new - from the meter, 22mm gas pipe in...
Up the outside wall, as far as the loft/eves, along and then down to the kitchen.....

From when we had our kitchen fitted not long ago, I spotted the 22mm gas pipe under the floor already!!!!

Again, they're wanting £106 for 6mx15mm copper pipe, and £403 for 21mx22mm copper pipe - must be for the gas feed..

    And the list goes on............

Out of desperation, OH wants to go ahead, she thinks it's our only option as we've just came out of a debt management plan and think we'll not get a loan of some kind to pay an independent RGE.

Anyone any idea what else we can do...?

The most important thing here is WHY do you NOT have Hot Water or Heating, and what was the problem that initiated the BG response?

Has you system always worked OK in the past?

AND BG ARE HAVING A GIRAFFE ;)

I sympathise with your situation.Having a reliable source of heating /hot water ,especially at this time of year, is essential. This may sound brutal but is not intended to be.You say you have just been through a debt management plan so the absolute worse thing you can do would be a finance plan at a high rate of interest to buy something which is about 80% overpriced. You know you are being 'cheated' and lied to re-22mm pipe.If you work on a ball park £2000 /£2500 it should get you a power flush/chemical flush (much less,if suitable),filter, wireless thermostat, boiler with 5/7 year guarantee. As a stop gap,you could find out how much to mend your boiler and if the repair would get you through the winter.PM me if I can be of further help or to explain any of above.
  • Several people have said, even before BG said it, that it's not worth repairing our current boiler that's now 11 years old.

My parents know someone who had the same boiler as ours and had nowt but bother with it. We were told this AFTER having ours fitted!

What make is your boiler? Has it stopped working ,if so what was it doing before stopping? Some old boilers ,although not efficient by today's standards, were built to last. Some names produce a rolling of the eyes and a muted Arrgh.I have just got a 21 year boiler going and learnt a bit in the process. It should last the winter. My customer is saving for a replacement.Where are you based?

It's had 2 heat exchanger seals, and now it sounds like the PCB's are going, I think that's what happened to my parents friends boiler. It started with a seal, and in the end, had nearly every part replaced!

Oh, and we live in Northumberland.

Did they all stand to benefit if you bought a new boiler?

Our last boiler, a Potterton Prima, was installed in 1993 and was still working fine when we sold the house in 2010, 17 years later, having had about £30 in total spent on it in replacing a broken fan assembly.

We never had it serviced either. Possibly wrong of us but nothing ever happened to it or us. It just chugged away reliably year in and year out.

;) This is an entirely different issue to that of the OP and you should have started a separate post rather than HIGHJACK the OP's problem ;)

The reason, gas pipework is a safety and minimum gas flow issue that is a regulatory issue ;)
