It also means visiting foreign vehicles contribute, the moment fuel is put in them.

That will be infinitesimally‎ small, unless they go touring in Scotland.

I fill my tank in Calais before driving home to Aberdeen without any further fuel.

A foreign driver aware of our over-taxed fuel would only need a few litres to get back across the channel, if they only went as far North as Yorkshire.

Foreign trucks despite getting around 5 or 6mpg have such big long-distance tanks that they too rarely need any/much fuel to return.

I would like to see some tax on jet fuel which at the moment is too cheap.

Good news for kitcars and motorbikes, no more tax disc theft to worry about.....

The same for 8mph Mobility Scooters too.

That really would need to be an international agreement, though, for the same reasons you suggest with foreign trucks.

Just bought a new car with low emissions - NO VED anyway :))
But will still have £0 disc for the time being.... which is slightly bonkers.

I've got one car that's free VED as of this month, and another which'll be free VED this time next year. But I just need to put 'em back together first...

I've been thinking about what will happen in October.

My VED disc is valid up to the end of Jan 2015 - but could I bin it come October?

Yep, the piece of round paper becomes irrelevant in a few months. Your paid-for period expires in Jan, though, and you'll need to pay for it again then.

My current tax disc expires 30th September so my current disc is the last disc. If I still have this car.

So at long last I managed to find this gov.uk update which better explains that when a car is sold the vehicle tax will not be transferred with it, and the new owner has to arrange their own tax payment before they can use the car.

Automatic refunds on full months will be sent to the previous owner.

So that means that if a car is transferred to a new owner part way through a month the original owner will get no refund for that month and the new owner will have to pay for that same month.

So double payment for the month that the car changes hands.

    Clever government eh?

Also it will be possible for anyone to check the tax status of any car online.
