My best guess is the tap would stop running but as in my above post I just don't know how it would work but I guess this makes me an idiot. Yep, that's about right.
If hose attached to the tap then the water would have to go somewhere...as above I think you would of noticed your back garden flooding?
Does that make more sense to you now professor? Don't worry your little head about it. These days water is controlled by magic, anyway.0 -

Your assumption that a back garden would flood if a hose was left running might, or might not, be correct.
It is more than possible that the water would simply run off the garden, or enter a sewer or a soakaway.
Anyway, apparently, the OP hadn't noticed his back garden flooding;)0 -

You can fit hosepipes with an auto-stop connector, which is opened by whatever you connect to it (spray nozzle etc)0 -

I assumed that Kayalana though all hoses had an autostop connecter.
Though that wouldn't have help if a spray nozzle was left connected.0 -
I do wish mart.vader and Kayalana99 would stop trying to see who has the biggest stop-!!!! here!
Both points are valid, but the OP didn't give enough info.
If the hose is connected to the tap but there is no spray gun or sprinkler on the other end, the water would have just filled the hose and stopped, thus no usage.
OP: What is on the other end of the hose?
Some outdoor taps aren't great and therefore the OP may not have noticed their garden "flooding" as the OP's garden may have been able to drain the "leak" away, especially if the power isn't great from the tap.
OP: How did you find out the tap was on?
Without the answers to the above questions, no point in guessing or trying to advise anything.0 -
I hadn't responded since 12 days ago. Don't know why you felt the need to.
BTW, What do you think is particularly 'valid' about "I don't understand how a hose can stop a tap running" and "what happens when a hose gets full - would it just stop the tap or explode" ?0
