Not knowing which landfill doesn't make it lost. It means they've disposed of it and all responsibility for caring of it.

But there is no evidence it has been broken, and no evidence it has been disposed of. Therefore the OP should be covered for the basic level of compensation.

If they had delivered the mirror in a broken condition, then OP would be due nothing because they got their goods and had taken the risk to send glass.

Instead they have conveniently disposed of it, with no evidence. As such it should be treated as lost and OP due the basic compensation. (Which is pretty much the point pinkshoes made above).

They can prove it was broken. It will be noted in their movement records that the packaged was damaged, and with the broken glass a H&S risk that needed to be dealt with.

Don't believe them, then take them to court (and inevitably lose).

I think the courier should pay up in full if they can't provide a simple photo showing the shattered mirror.

Disposing of a broken item without taking a photo is idiotic and unprofessional.

If they can't prove it was broken, they should pay up, as how do we know an employee doesn't have a nice mirror for their house?

    It doesnt matter,lost,broken or whatever

it was carried under a no compensation basis as per their T&Cs
So the basic compensation is £0
The following items (or any item similar in description or content) can only be carried on a no compensation basis on any service.
Any person sending such an item does so at their own risk:
    Framed Photograph
    Gems Or Gemstones
    Glass
    Glassware
    Gold
    Hamper
    Headlight
    Jewellery
    Lamp
    Lampshades
    Lenses
    Lighting
    Lights
    Marble
    Microscope
    Microwave
    Mirror
    Monitor (Including Imacs)
    Ornament
    Over Head Projector
    Painting
    Pewter Figures
    Picture
    Picture Frames

As you can see frames, glass etc are all included
    for good reason
without adequate(which bubble wrap alone isnt) protection, they are easily broken
