This is why people want to leave the EU

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/04/horsemeat-scandal-uk-brussels-failing-france

The UK is trying to prevent EU-wide regulation of the food industry in response to the horsemeat scandal. Basically, the food industry doesn't want us to know what it puts in our food, we - the public - overwhelmingly do. Our government is more concerned about big food companies than the public's interests, and the ones standing up for us are the EU.

Why is your thread title is 'This is why people want to leave the EU' when you're praising the EU? Surely it should be 'This is why we need to be in the EU so our Government can't ignore the public's interests'

Could be either - I think that the reason politicians want us to leave the EU is for their own business interests and against ours as consumers and - to use that awful phrase - hardworking families.

It's already the law that all ingredients must be listed on the packaging and none must be misrepresented or misnamed, so if the big companies don't want us to know what's in our food they've already got a bit of a problem.

If you want to know where your food comes from either grow it yourself or go to a local farm shop.
The reason why the scandals occurred is because people think they need meat 3x a day and will only buy the cheapest they can at a big supermarket.

If you want to know the traceability of your food, then do the research yourself. It might cost you more money, but it will support local food producers and probably be healthier for you.
