The problem with cooling your chimney on a log fire is that tar and cerosote can build up in the chimney.

^^^^ Ditto ! extremely BAD idea to let flue temps drop to such an extent where tar and creosote can build up, I have swept many flues that have become blocked with crud and also been to clear up after flue / chimney fire from said build up's as well.

Be interesting to know what would happen if one of these open tubes got "holed".

Wouldn't it then start blowing the "smoke/fumes" directly into your home?

Found this as well which does the same job. I'd be more worried about possible CO poisoning.

I wouldn't want to interfere with the manufacturer's safe and tested method of removing flue gases.

I can't really see how this is substantially different to a Eco Fan, also as others have said, this method interupts the normal flow of gas removal from your stove.

Go for the Eco Fan type units instead!
