thanks for that. After I have reached there, how can I find the files on the hard disk and copy them to the external hard drive which I will have connected to the laptop.

Sorry for sounding so dumb and obscure... as I cannot find any quide on the ubuntu website about how to recover data..
I read the link provided by you but it tells about the File browser window and about the location bar etc..
    Thanks
I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T

Use File Browser: click Applications → System Tools → File Browser. https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/user-guide/C/nautilus-browser-mode.html#gosnautilus-492

It should be similar to Windows Explorer and you should see both the C: drive and the external drive.

When I try to install UBUNTU in the damaged laptop through the CD, it starts off well and then I get this error message

There was an error starting the GNOMEsettings Daemon
Some things like sounds, themes or background settings may not work.

    The last error message was

Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include
, the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired or the network connection was broken.

GNE will still try to restart the settings.

And the message stays there on the screen for 15 min and then the screen goes black. And the same cycle repeats.

    Kindly advice

    Update:

Ubuntu does not seem to working with me .... so

I think I will try and download Knnopix and burn the CD and try and see whether that works and helps to respore the data out of my damaged Laptop.

OK, Knoppix is easier to use than Ubuntu because it automatically shows you the Windows hard drives and therefore it's better for recovering data.

Alternatively, if you have a Windows XP CD you could make a Windows boot/rescue CD, but try Knoppix first.

Using Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, however in order to build this CD you need a Windows XP CD, either with SP1/SP2 on it already or download SP2 and create a XP SP2 'slipstreamed' CD yourself.

Many thanks to all of you for yur vaueable advice.

I finally managed to install Knnopix and am in the process of recovering my data and transferring to another PC. It is going slow because I have only 512 MB USB Drive.

I am going to order an external hard drive to make things quik and to back up my data as well. I looked for external HDD and the one I fancy buying is the 250 GB from Amazon from Weston Digital costing £47.99
    Any suggestions on that..

    Thanks

Yes, a slow process but better than nothing! If you have files bigger than 512 MB you could upload them to the internet using Konqueror (Knoppix's web browser), as long as you have a network connection.

The Western Digital drive would be suitable. They, along with Seagate have a good reputation for reliability.

Or do yu think a passport HD will be more suitable as suggested by some readres on the other forum..
    Like this one

    60 GB

    and this

    120 GB

And do I need to buy any cashing or any other wirees apart from the ones coming with them. I am intending to use the drive just to back up my data,

    Thanks
