Check in the bios settings that the CD drive is higher up in the boot order than the HD.

If it is, how did how burn the CD, from an iso? Did you burn the iso as a file, or load it into nero etc first as an image of a CD?

Switch on the laptop and tap the F12 key a few times as soon as the Dell logo appears. If you catch it soon enough a menu of different boot devices should appear. Insert the CD and choose the CD/DVD drive. Provided you have burnt the CD correctly it should boot into Ubuntu.

I am having problem burning the CD. I try burning it using the software Infrarecorder as recomended on UBUNTU site.

I am writing the CD in the simulation mode.

I am using the Session at once or should I be using some other mode to write like there are 4 more modes like one track at a time, raw98 , raw 96 or so ......
I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T

In InfraRecorder click Actions and select Burn Image and select the Ubuntu .iso file you downloaded. Select a slow recording speed (4x) and burn it to a fresh blank CD-R.

Thanks I have the CD now and I have booted the CD in the dead laptop.

And I have pressed the option 1 which says start UBUTU or Install Ubutu.

Now what do I need to do next to copy the files from the defective PC.

    Thanks

You need to connect an external USB hard drive or USB flash drive, or you could even upload them to the internet if you have a network (internet) connection.

First of all though, can you see any files on the defective hard drive? Use File Browser - https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/user-guide/C/nautilus-browser-mode.html#gosnautilus-492

    Thanks.

But I am confused as yesterday when I was installing the UBUNTU(1st option)on the affected laptop, it stoped in the middle saying some error, I think it was something like GENOME Error or something like that and it stopped, so I switched off the laptop.

    Thanks

What I need to know is what is the first step I do after I insert the CD n start my laptop. It gives a number of options of which fist one is to start or install ubuntu which I tried last night.
Start or install Ubuntu is the correct option. It should boot up (can take 5-10 mins) and when finished you should be presented with an Ubuntu system running from the CD.
