Actually I think you'll find Orange do not allow diversion to international numbers. I asked the other day and he said yes then no. So I just tried it to two different numbers. Request not completed the phone says; and sure enough it was the one that rang when I called it.
However Orange's charges to European mobiles do not cost a bomb as you say, but either 20p or 16.66p per minute.
You'd be very lucky to find an 0870 or 0871 number to divert to foreign mobiles (except cheap ones like USA) at no cost from the number provider, or do you have an account as well?
I do have an 0871 number to but they are not available at the moment. You can still divert calls using the phone itself. On OVP Voda they have charged 50p per minute and on OVP Virgin 30p per minute for 0871 number. I hope they are checking these tariffs, as I believe from elsewhere that Virgin charge !5p, but it is notoriously difficult to get charging details from any of the networks. I've just been told again it is 12p - correction it's a premium rate number.
Edit - it is even more notorious than I thought. I've just spent 56 minutes talking to Orange CS and 27 to Virgin CS. At the moment Orange think OVP Virgin is 43p but seem to have charged about 30p; OVP Voda 25p peak, 12.5p off-peak (this sounds very odd indeed), charged 50p. Virgin CS don't know and will get info and call me back0 -
It definately did work :-( But you are right it no longer does (should of tried before posting.). I used to use it when I was in Russia and Oman I diverted the calls to the landline / mobile when battery was going flat or whatever. (The reason why I said it will cost a bomb cause I forgot for a moment that West Europe has cheaper rate than Russia and Oman with Orange.) So yet again Orange simple process strike again. But good news it works on "O2" just tried that. What is wrong with Orange, removing Equity points, Everyphone, Wildfire, Everyday 50 (ok can see why for that) have they remove for new customers line 2 and conference call yet!0

You can divert O2 to international? I just tried it and you're right. So I tried 3 and it won't accept.
I don't know how useful that would be as the O2 number is one I don't usually use, but I might have to check the tariff. Thing is though I did use it in Lithuania last year as backup to local sim, as with their ITS the calls are about half the price of Orange, who welcomed the new entrant countries to the EU by doubling roaming prices in Eastern Europe a few months earlier (fortunately I had a Polish sim that year)0 -
I checked O2's contract tariffs. With ITS (£2.99/month) these European countries and USA & Canada cost 17p per minute -
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faeroe Islands Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Italy & Vatican, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
some of these countries are available on a one-country fee of 99p per month
This means O2 customers visiting there can get a local SIM card and divert incoming calls to their UK mobile to it at that price.0 -

If you have a tariff over £30 with o2 direct (i.e. not the online tariffs) I think you get ITS free."An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0

on mine the rent is free0

rent for free? do you mean after cashback? or is that a customer relations deal? Since if so my two contracts are due for renewal and would be interested in that! (don't need a new phone.)0
-
no, the rent is paid up front for life
....... and no longer available0
