I still love these
My gran bought them as they were published and it was a real treat to get a new one. The pictures are just wonderful, you can spend hours looking at them.
I also loved Titch by Pat Hutchins.0 -

Trying to think of other stuff that are the "must read" things in primary schools.
Rainbow Fish hasn't been mentioned -not my fave but around a LOT
Where The Wild Things Are
Other ones that I particularly love -
Gruffalo (obviously!)
Jill Murphy - someone's mentioned some of the Large Family ones - I love The Last Noo Noo more though
Pumpkin Soup is my personal favourite book though - absolutely beautiful illustrations.
Plus GOOD and not mucked-about-by-Disney versions of classic fairy tales.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
When she is older; if you can get it - Kate Seredy The Good Master etc.
The main character is a feisty girl.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Did you see the Imagine.. programme about the author of that book last week? I've actually forgotten her name now
but it was a fascinating insight into her life and how the books like Mog and the Tiger who came to Tea came about. 0 -
The Little Prince is also a good children's book (and adults!)

+1 for the Book People - I've bought metres of sets from them. They've meant I've always had books to hand that I don't mind reading & re-reading, in a form that hasn't been battered by time & at a price that they can gnaw on & I won't whimper, much.
(Unlike the Folio Editions which really are for godparents who don't know any better, bless them!)
If you get hold of "A Few Minutes Peace", get *several* copies. Every parent should have one, if only for the biting irony. It's a lovely read, even if the child enjoys the tale & the parent sits & winces...0 -

One for the adults, but inspired by that book is this delightful spoof:
