' classic' children's books

My daughter will turn 3 shortly after xmas and as a present I wanted to get her a selection of 'classic' children's books. I don't mean like fairy tales, but more traditional books. I have come up with the following ideas but would love more suggestions.
Green eggs and ham (dr seuss)
Wind in the willows
Paddington bear
Going on a bear hunt
Beatrix potter

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • A beautiful book of illustrated nursery rhymes - children love them. The little original Beatrix Potter books with the original drawings. More modern classics - Each Peach Pear Plum, Dogger, The Very hungry catterpillar .... and loads more! Have fun. Reading to children is lovely!

If you're going back as far as 'Wind in the Willows' then look at some of the other 'children's classics' from way back. 'Alice in Wonderland' is an obvious choice.

My favourite children's author was Violet Needham. Also, Rosemary Sutcliffe. A bit beyond the 3-year old age-group, though.

The originals are the best, eg Mr Grumpy, Angry et al. Don't bother with the modern day ones like Mr Greedy goes into town to buy a sandwich just to make Mr Hargreaves Jr a few extra bob ;)
