spec-wise the i3 is a poorer performer, but build wise it probably better. If you are carting it everywhere around the house and garden, or using it for business, or have kids bash at it, the construction does count a fair bit. Also these days many people no longer need a dvd drive, so check the specs for what you need.

Moving it back and forward on a thinner, and less reinforced case could flex and stress the motherboard to the point where failure will occur much earlier. Also the components used are often of better quality and if you are lucky the drive is more protected from shock.

I bought myself one of the cheapest 17" i7 laptops a year ago, and from day one it did not feel that sturdy. The fan was a bit noisy and the laptop plastic creaked when i picked it up and still does. Screen hinges do not feel to be the most robust. On the other side I know it is probably never going to be dropped or moved any great distances from my bed and is always on a soft surface and the screen is always open. The foreseeable problems will in time be dust though, and possible blocking of the bottom vent holes.

For me the price point vs build quality vs length of trouble free ownership. I gamble that it will pay off over 3 years, but there are no absolutes. Mine cost £765, but the next equivalent was £1200. The refub dells were around £950. My old laptop is a business class HP laptop is still working and have now for over 6 years and used it every day for 5 years trouble free on many times 48+ hour stints. My friend bought the exact same model within a week or so of my purchase for his daughter, and the hard disk and 3 power packs and one battery and keyboard have failed within the first 3 years.

best is to look here http://www.hotukdeals.com/computers/deals/hot then click on the comments. My friend bought an Acer using my method, and for her £500, it lasted 1 year and 3 months
