have you checked the refurb shop?

There seem to be more than one spec for dell latitude e5540 . It is either the old latitude series, or a very new series

Why not just use W8 with Classic Shell on it? Hey presto, instant W7 effect!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It is freeware/donation-ware which put the start button back including some menus.

is your goggle broken again? http://www.classicshell.net/

Classic Shell does work rather well. Pitty MS do not listen to their paying customers, especially these days now that there are some awesome implementations of linux for free out there which are very windows feature rich

I would recommend looking at the Dell Outlet as well, the small business one seems to get a reasonable number of machines coming through whereas the home one seems quieter. One of the advantages of a Latitude machine is that it comes with a three year next business day on site as standard which is an upgrade on the consumer machines.

The Latitudes aren't as flashy or sleek as other machines and you pay a bit more for the spec but the Latitudes are usually fairly solid machines that are more repairable than others and a decent warranty to back them up.

that is a lot of money for an i3. Here seem to do it for £28 cheaper and they are not know as a cheap company https://uk.insight.com/en-gb/productinfo/laptops-and-notebooks/0002490231

Forgrt the above link - Yours had dropped in price to £410, but excludes vat and shipping
    http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/latitude-3540-laptop/pd

i would prefer the touchscreen i5 in that link it is £548, shipping free - Dell usually charge for shipping. Better cpu and cheaper. The only thing I can see good about your choice, is that is runs windows Professional, which can be used to connect to a corporate network domain - Litte use to most home users.

Get your windging windows 8 friend to install Classic Shell, and he will probably not know the difference - except the start button is now a shell picture :)

The machines you've listed are no the same class of machine - the Latitude 15 3000 laptops are budget machines similar to Dell's consumer line while an E series 55xx Latitude which the OP posted are the standard business laptops. You trade better build quality for lower specs at the same price, depends what the priority as to which is the better one.
