My insurance documents are in the passenger door pocket. I prefer to have them with me at all times. Just me though.
  • a few years ago the police took my car off me on a saturday afternoon, it was insured and i continued the insurance 4 weeks before through swinton so it wasnt a new policy, didnt check askmid, they couldnt get in touch with the insurance company, so they took the car. always a good idea to check the status of your insurance when its up for renewal or carry the documents on you to show the police,

You keep them at home and stop reading web pages designed for Americans.

Traffic Cop.. We tend not to use that term.

    License.. Americans cannot spell Licence.

Proof of insurance is a card from your automotive insurance company. Not in the UK it isn't.

Registration is the paper document affiliated with the number plate on the outside of your car, showing that your car is legally registered for the year. Legally registered for the year...

Although the actual laws for carrying these items in your car vary from state to state. State to State...
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

Strictly speaking, there is a requirement to produce them at the roadside. But this being Britain, there is an allowance built into the law to allow for the fact that you may have forgotten them, so giving you up to seven days to produce them at a police station.

I have them all on my iPhone, neatly scanned and ready to show in case of any requirement to do so, I keep a PDF of my licence, V5C, MoT and insurance Certificate, and I update it every year.

No issues of getting them lost or dog eared......

That's all well and good, but ......

Try showing them to the unshaven border guard at the Turkish - Greek frontier at 03.30 in the morning.

He's cold and miserable - his sentry-box is leaky and draughty - his boss is in the border-post backroom with his girlfriend - he's ran out of cigarettes - he's tried shooting a few sparrows (and missed) - his piles are bothering him - and he's hungry.

So you turn up and show him an iPhone. :(

"Wait over there, in the queue with the trucks on that unlit muddy bit of rough ground." :rotfl:

We Brits have an easy time in the UK - just remember to take your docs with you when you venture further afield. ;)

All mine are neatly filed at home.

If stopped the Police will require you to produce them there and then. If you are unable to do so they will issue a HORT1 which will require you, within 7 calendar days from midnight on the day you were stopped, to produce them at a Police Station of your choice (which you must name).

Failure to produce is committed at the time of the stop.

In spite of the fact that they can see your tax, driving licence (licenCE because it's a noun) etc if you P the cops off enough they will issue a HORT1 to inconvenience you.
  • I wouldn't dream of keeping driving licence/MOT CERT/ insurance doc/ in car.

Don't like keeping the tax disc in the car though it would be impractical not too.

Does ANPR check for MOT? a mixed message seems to be given on this one. A doctor who is married to a copper tells me that the anpr does not pick up lack of mot at the roadside.

... but you're required by law to display the tax disc on the vehicle - so questions of 'impracticality' don't enter into it.

Does that apply in my garage?
