Travel insurance covering hire car excess

I am planning a trip to Australia and will be hiring a car. Apparently Australia is unusual in that the insurance provided with a hire car has a large excess (several thousand dollars). You can pay upfront to reduce this to a lower level, but this is expensive. I notice that some travel insurance policies specifically exclude anything to do with motorised vehicles. Can anyone recommend a good travel insurance that WILL cover me for the large excess I would have to pay if my hire car were damaged?

I have used these guys as a separate policy to cover car hire excess as an alternative to the hire company's damage waiver

The only downside is that you pay the excess & claim it back from them, that may be an issue for"several thousand" AUD

This isnt unusual but standard to anywhere outside of the USA, its what the CDW you pay each time you hire a car is.

You are going to be better off getting it separate from travel insurance and there are a number of companies that offer it. Limiting yourself to only providers that do a combined policy is going to be too restrictive and very possibly is two separate policies behind the scenes anyway.
  • Many thanks! Very helpful!
