My understanding is that answering the calls are the biggest point you're going wrong. Once a line connects they keep the number and then sell it around to other dubious companies.
There's only two ways to avoid these, a: don't answer any unknown number or b: that Truecall device that Richard53 mentioned which basically does a similar thing.0 -

It is the same as replying to spam emails with UNSUBSCRIBE It basically tells them they have a live one at that numbers as they are more than likely just dialling and changing the end digit until they get a phone that a. rings and is b. answeredWhat if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
ask them if the fact you were 4 times over the drink drive limit at the time could impede any claim0
