using tablet as universal remote

Hi all, I am researching buying a tablet and was going to go for the Tesco Hudl, but......
I have now realised that some tablets (specifically the samsung galaxy tab 2 or 3), have an IR blaster and so can be used via an app as a universal remote control for TV and set top box etc.
The apps look great and far easier to use than my TV guide as they give suggestions of whats currently on in various genres etc etc.
Does anyone use a tablet like this and how do you find it?
I am on Talk Talk if that makes any difference.

I dont think its via IR but I have a phone app to turn my phone into a sky remote. Much fun is had by me when the wife tries to change the channel and it magically turns back. On a serious note the app works very well. Not sure this was of any help but wanted to share the jokey tip :-)
