Can you use too much frontline?

I just found a flea so went rummaging in the cupboard and found some frontline that I whacked on gitdog, only to realise after that its well past its expiry date. Given its probably lost some effectiveness, any idea when I can next reapply it if I get some more.
Have I read somewhere that frontline isn't very effective any more? And is it still prescription only?

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

You can buy Frontline over the counter at Lloyds Pharmacy and most online pet supplies places too, also Amazon sell it.
On the leaflet included with the Frontline it says something like "no adverse effects were noted at five times the recommended dosage" so I would be ok about reapplying the Frontline after about two weeks.0
