Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having separate accounts?

I am really not good at spreadsheets. Also the only computer I have is my phone which does not have excel on it. The main thing is that it is not in real time. Every payment you make means faffing with excel.

You know, I could get angry with you.You have not even tried the link I posted. It has nothing at all to do with Excel. The link I sent you does things in real time.

Please do try, or don't bother people.

One money manager thingy you could get is MS Money (free downloads from places, you'd need to google).

You can have quadrillions of virtual accounts in MS Money, and as few or as many current accounts as you like. Very easy to transfer money from one account to another.

It's just a glorified spreadsheet but it works great. I have about 100 accounts in my MS Money (not all active), going back 20 years or so. Does need a PC though.

Just have 2 or even 3 accounts, 1 for wages in and DD's/bills out and 1 ( or 2 ) for other spends eg fuel etc. You can make it work, or use spreadsheets, you can get spreadsheets on your phone if capable.

I'm afraid the OP is a master exponent of the yes, but game.
  • I can see it now - she will come into the branch wanting to withdraw cash but of course she won't have the account number handy - she will say take £x out of holiday account but of course the bank records will only have a list of account numbers and won't have a clue which account is her holiday account.

Meanwhile the queue is now out of the branch and is blocking traffic in the high street!

Good on the bank I say.

I manage the accounts online. If I would like to withdraw the holiday cash for example I simply log on with my phone onto the accounts. transfer 100 from holiday into current account then withdraw with the debit card. In a year I will only go into a physical bank a couple of times a year, to pay in a cheque for example.

Can you post a link to the money programme you use? That might be easier for the OP than my suggestion of spreadsheets.

To all the others laying in on the OP: give her a chance. She is used to budgeting with envelopes and wants to take the next step.

Have just found out that Microsoft Money (which I have used for 10+ years) is no longer available - according to DH he just copies it to any new computer we get! Surely there must be other programmes available!

No, it just makes it easier to manage my money. It will be very clear to me that this unexpected expense has taken money from xyz. There is no adding up and mistakes which lead me to think I have

    £50 towards new sofa
    £80 towards holiday spending money
    £50 left for petrol
    £200 for car tax etc...

If there is just a lump of £380 but the notebook says there is £400 because I forgot to note I spent extra on fuel for that emergency then the whole thing is ruined is it not? With the savings accounts with actual MONEY in them; if it is there it is there, if it is not it is not. End of story.

I appreciate your posting the link. I went onto it, and it says, 'Learn google spreadsheets' and there are 16 lessons. I do not mean to be obtuse but it really looks very complicated. It is teaching you how to make a spreadsheet, but even if I master that it does not change the fact that if I have to manually track all my spending all I have done is given myself another task on my daily 'to do list'
    pack the sandwiches,
    feed the fish,
    update the spreadsheet,
    change the bin...
