So Basically the OP is using the 18 bank accounts as a LIVE excel programme. :exclamati:doh::exclamati:doh::doh:

So how hard is it to do on a computer or paper notebook

    Good Grief.!!!!!

    Just LAZY!!!

PS How did you get 18 accounts. I have to give an arm and a leg plus first born and sheets of paper just to get an extra account with my bank. (And I have had my mortgage and current account and Isa's with my bank for over 23years+ !!!)

With my method it is all done automatically. there is nothing to remember and nothing to write down.

    Pardon.

Don't you have to remember to do transactions on the phone AND enter the info via phone (keyboard?) :o

  • LeeLou and Sitesafe - just found this thread and am quite frankly appalled by the sarcasm and criticism from some of the replies. I too use Nationwide with several e-accounts from my flex account. Nationwide is easy to access on line, easy to move money around and easy to rename accounts. I'm not quite up to 18, but probably have 11 or so. I rarely have to go into my branch so don't especially bother staff (although I have to say they have been most helpful when I have gone in - in fact one of them asked about my system and was planning to emulate). I do not have paper copies of statements sent to me.
Live and let live I say - if you are the sort of person who writes every penny into a spread sheet or app and manages to reconcile this - good on you. It doesn't work for me. My several accounts systems works for me and has meant that after years of struggling to keep track of my money and budget, I have finally cracked it.
LeeLou, I completely understand the dismay in your initial post at coming to the end of you quota - I live in fear of this!

I've been following this thread but have yet to comment. Whilst I can see the point of "pots" of money, I don't understand how you get around one fatal flaw.

Let's say you have a "pot" for a certain bill that is £120. So you pay in £10 per month into the "pot" for that particular bill.

What do you do when that bill is due in March and you only have £30 in the pot? Rob from some other pots to pay the bill, and then remember to "pay them back"?

I fully understand having sub-categories for your savings but for me the only way to do it is one big pot with everything split virtually so that I avoid the problem of bills coming in the early part of a year.

I suppose you could have a "float" in each pot so you can pay a bill in January and then top it back up through the year. But that would seem to defeat the purpose of the pots.

Now, I hope you are as willing to understand as you were willing not to understand - really can't be bothered with any more playground tactics

so with your #5 and #3 comments you now totally contradict yourself (why am I not surprised). I don't believe you are stupid. I suspect you are deliberately ignoring or misconstruing the good advice of others - although I really cannot envision any good reason why, unless doing it for effect. What used to be called 'a cry for help'' but in this age and medium is often called a troll.

A lot of people putting LeeLoo down for not wanting to do it "their way".

Lay off folks - not everyone has a mind that works in the same way as yours! At least LeeLoo is in control of her finances, which is more than can be said of a lot of folk, especially those not comfortable with spreadsheets or budgeting software (or notebooks...)

    From my perspective...
    - I manage everything in a single account.
    - If my wife had to take over the finances, I would want her to follow LeeLoo's model! I know she couldn't manage it any other way.

Unfortunately, I doubt if she could find a bank that would let her near 18 accounts.

The banks put themselves in this position with their pricing model (i.e. no charge for the administrative process of opening an account), and I doubt if their T&Cs prevent it (most of them anyway). However, as is said elsewhere, they are also not under obligation to open the accounts.

I don't think LeeLoo will have any joy opening more accounts with the existing bank. The only option for having more accounts will be to find another bank that is willing to open a number of accounts - probably best to have one that allows them to be opened online, to reduce likelihood of a jobsworth getting in the way.
LeeLoo will now have to manage 2 logins (not 18+ as was suggested...) and cope with a little bit of hassle when transferring funds from one bank to another.

Any suggestions of a bank/account that can satisfy LeeLoo?

    Good luck LeeLoo!
    Les

PS: With electronic statements, the cost to the banks of maintaining these additional accounts is minimal (unless they are on antique systems...)
  • Hi hoolooovoo, re query about not having enough - for the first year I worked out when the bill was due and divided this by how many months there was in between. Once the bill was paid, I then divided by 12 months, which was clearly easier. I did get caught out with my 'Birthday' pot 1st year round - had quite a few Birthdays in the first part of the year, so hadn't built up the float, so to speak (luckily I had some extra money that I would have put into savings).
Lesker - I use Nationwide. It it possible to have 4 flex accounts (not that I would recommend having 4 flex accounts necessarily as this means 4 debit cards etc) and then multiple e-savings accounts can be opened on-line attached to the flex account - no jobsworth! LOL!

TBH I don't see how your message is constructive or helpful. I don't believe that I contradict myself but feel free to send me a private message explaining. With your reference to #3 and #5 - I was responding to comments from another poster hence if you look - eg #5 comment from another poster then my response below that headed #5 and so on....

As regards your comment that I am 'deliberately ignoring or misconstruing the good advice of others' : without going through the whole thread to check I believe I haven't asked for any advice (on this thread) and haven't been given advice (other than the odd comment) I don't have time to go through the whole thread but I guess you will so please point out the posts where I asked for and received advice in return and I will acknowledge the relevant posters....

And the troll comment - again your opinion

I can only speak for myself, not the OP, but the accounts are e-savings accounts (online) which are sub accounts linked to the main current account - you can open them up in seconds so it's not like you have to go through an application process or anything.
