Monthly Bus Pass - My Rights to Cancel

Options
So I've had a monthly bus pass for a couple of years, paid automatically by direct debit.

My office is now moving and I need a different type of pass. However I emailed the relevant people to find out how to cancel my current pass and they said I need to come into their offices and fill out a form, at least ten days before the next payment is due to come out.

It's less than 10 days until the next payment, and this office is only open 9-5 weekdays anyways (I don't work anywhere near it).

Also, there is absolutely nothing online about cancelling these cards. Not even in the terms and conditions.

If I just cancel the direct debit are there any likely repercussions? Presumably I'm not actually in any kind of contract....

  • If your employers just cancelled your salary payment would that be acceptable?

Cancelling payment is not the same as cancelling a contract and can add failed payment fees to what you owe. You need to read the contract you signed and see what it states about how cancellation is done and what notice, if any, is required. If it doesnt state anything then send a letter, getting a certificate of posting, stating you want it cancelled with immediate effect and call their attention to the fact the contract doesnt require any notice period etc

No, not if I was still working for them. Is this the same? I want to cancel payment for a service I will no longer be using. If I carried on paying while not using the pass, would that not be the same as me expecting my employer to keep paying me after I left the company?

Pretty sure there wasn't a contract. Just an application form. As I said, the ts and cs online have no mention of cancellations whatsoever.

Does this make a difference? Bit worried about giving too much information away.

Well a bit more info about the bus pass in question may well help us to help you!

Is it an Easyrider tocket on DD, if so what type is it currently and what type are you wanting to move to?

Yes, it appears there's the NCT card or Kangagroo card.

Okay... it's the Kangaroo Card. I'm moving to a Trent Barton monthly pass -private company so different thing completely.

I'd point out that it could be considered an unfair contract term if you need to cancel by a method distinctly different to the method you used to sign up.
