Water around kitchen Sink

What's around the sink that would be affected by water? Worktops are normally waterproof. If it's the walls, then you may need to tile it, or use some other waterproof covering. I thought that was pretty much standard around sinks.

I suppose in the long run the water splashing on the sink top would leak and damage that area.

Can't really understand this one.

We use a sponge (it's called a thick moppit) to wipe around the sink when finished and perhaps during washing if a big splash occurs.

As long as the sink has been fitted on a gasket and there's some sealant between the worktop and the back wall, there's not much else you need to do.
