and if the stomach is empty before the meds and treats????????? wont they work just as well?
Well, according the leaflet the meds are most efficacious taken on an empty stomach as this facilitates absorption. A small amount of treats probably won't make much difference, but the more I break up the tablets to hide in treats, the more additional food is going into her stomach. Ideally she should just be eating the 'chewable' tablets on their own, but that boat sailed long ago :D

These tablets are soooo expensive I want to make sure she gets as much benefit out of them that is possible ;) Shame they don't make Dreamie flavoured tablets, she would sell her soul for a cheese flavoured Dreamie.

    An update:

I emailed Protexin who make Denamarin to let them know that my dog refused to chew their 'chewable tablets'. To be fair to them a vet responded within 2 hours saying that one of the ingredients is bitter and some dogs can still taste the bitterness through the flavourings although most can't. He advised that the tablets can be crushed (as this doesn't affect the efficacy of the active ingredients) so I will give that a try. Otherwise he advised that I try the ordinary tablets which are smaller, and so easier to hide in food.

I give my dog a bit of bread and butter, then hold out another piece with the tablet hidden in it, show her a third piece and she will gulp down the second piece with the tablet to get the third piece quicker.

Never fails with her, but then she is one greedy cow!
  • When Skye needs tablets I wrap it in a bit of cheese or ham and then have another piece ready. As most dogs are really greedy give her/him the bit with the tablet in and show the other bit at the same time. Hopefully he will wolf down the tablet so he can have the other piece as well. Always works with mine. HTH

Kiki has to have her thyroid medication an hour before food. I literally just pop the tablets on the back of her throat and she swallows them. Making sure they're centred and right at the back, otherwise she sometimes spits them out.
I originally gave a few treats with it but phased them out - now she gets a verbal reward/a bit of fuss. You may be able to train your girly to tolerate having them put in her mouth?

Mine won't touch the "meat flavoured" (they don't smell like any meat I can recognise!!)worming tablets so I now buy the cheapest garlic & herb cream cheese, take a teaspoon full , hide the tablet inside and....gone! Oh and I usually give a second spoonful to confuse them- sometimes the first has the tablet and sometimes the second......keeps them guessing

I've got my dog on Yumove at the moment and can just put them in with her food without the need for subterfuge.

She just scoffs them with the kibble.

I also find offering a second perhaps higher value (more smelly/tasty) treat quickly after the doctored one encourages them to swallow
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • I only have a cat, but usually cut upand hide tabs in a small piece of cheese, seems to work well, just check to make sure cheese is okay for dogs tho.
