Lady_K, you may not like our answers and offerings, but you also are telling us your ways do not work, and at bit of a stalemate.

We have suggested programs that search for long path names, and software that generates log file when copying, and cleaners to remove troublesome temp and possibly others files too.

Final program suggestion is to use FreeFileSync and here are the instructions below but heed the tips.
Tips: (1) follow the instructions closely, (2) On the right half of the screen, do not choose the destination files as the root directory as in c:\, or any \, instead make a new directory like c:\k and put the files into the directory and make sure after the path reflects this directory (3) on the top menu under Tools > Global Settings make sure both Fail-safe File copy and Copy locked files are both ticked

Probably a total red herring but thought I'd mention it anyway.

The only time I've ever encountered the 'file name too long to copy' was when I tried to copy my Kindle book library from one drive to another. Kindles, it seems, create ridiculously long file names when logging book downloads.

I am grateful for all of the help and advice given and I do take things on board but I do struggle to understand things or take things in when reading more than the average person but I do keep trying. I easily forget things and have to learn things over and over before I can do them. Its just a problem I have.

With this problem I'm just going to delete the uneeded files now that I know they are temp internet files.

I have been using ccleaner for years but don't do it every day so there just happened to be some on that laptop when the back ups were saved like most peoples pc, didn't delete them before saving because it had to be done quickly.

I might not be the brightest button in the box and it may seem I don't listen or ignore what advice is given but that is far from the case, actually doing it is the hardest thing and sometimes I have to give up because what might seem simple to others will be enormous to me and it gets the better of me and I cant keep bugging people
    Thanx

Thanks I had forgotten that too but I will definitely have a look at that.

I will give it a few days though as for one I need to get another hardrive as that one was picked up today and I do need a bit of a break from computer stuff because I've also been trying to get files back from the raw drive plus another one went disastrously wrong too and this all affects me healthwise for various reasons. I will definitely get it done this time though as it will be really bad if something goes wrong with this laptop and I don't have it backed up
    Thanx
