Cannot copy files to hardrive as files names too long

Just a shot in the dark, but if the transfer worked on the Toshiba but not on the Samsung, I wonder if the new Samsung drive needs to be formatted first to NTFS?
just had a look here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems
fat32 vs ntfs has a 4gig file size and 2TB capacity difference, but both support 255.
From which path are you copying from and to which path are you copying to?
e.g from c:\desktop\spreadsheet\*.*
to e:\new files\
Where does it stop/ error out on?
you could have a corrupt drive?0 -
use a disk image backup, as has been suggested umpteen times
the likelihood that any of the 200 files are important is slim!!

Yes I am going to do that but haven't got around to it yet what with other things happening (trying to recoup a RAW drive contents since) and as I haven't done a disc image backup before I didn't know how long file names worked doing it that way either but even so this hardrive is not working like it should do.Thanx

I have tried a few things and think although its confusing to me why it is saved on the Toshiba drive but cant be copied to the Samsung I don't understand it but somehow it must have something to do with the path between them making it too long.
I managed to find and reduce the path to a few of the files which were music by cutting out a folder and shortening the length of the name of the main folder not the music files.
It still says 185 files are too long to move and I found the path it takes
This is from an old laptop backup stored on the Toshiba (it was not saved as an image)
this is the folder route that the too long files go through
Toshiba drive
laptop backup pasted to samsung
untitled folder
username of laptop backup (I think I just clicked save over username originally)
Appdata
local
windows
temp internet files
low
contentie5 - then the 185 files are missing from most of these folders between them
I really don't understand why the difference between the Toshiba and the Samsung will make it too long but somehow it is.
I know it seems now that I probably don't need them as they are coming from temp internet files but could it stop anything from working if they are not there?
Its just not understanding why its happened that bothers me because I keep thinking is it going to affect anything else I want to save and I don't understand why I cant save it complete from the Toshiba to anywhere elseThanx

It could just be that the full path in the copy operation is too long.
A replacement drive won't make any difference. Are you pasting to an additional folder on the Samsung compared to the Toshiba drive?
Those of us that date back to the good old DOS 8.3 days use short names anyway!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I am just pasting the laptop backup folder directly into the main screen of the Samsung where the list of drivers and manuals are for the Samsung so I don't think its a folder.
Maybe I should just delete the temporary internet files or the whole temp internet files folderThanx

It is pointless backing up the system drive and application data unless you are doing an image backup. All you need is your data folders. Windows 7 has a very good backup utility built in. Copy and paste is not the way to do it.
What is your "laptop backup folder"?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. The laptop backup folder is just the folder I created to put the files into when I saved them.
I saved it a couple of years ago before I found out about image backup but I don't have the laptop anymore so its all there isThanx

I'd just try copying the data folders you may actually need to the Samsung drive. If they go over without an error, then the problem is not an issue. Still not sure what is causing the error, except that it probably is to do with filename or path length.

ccleaner and macrium/disk image backup has been suggested many times in many threads over many years, you'd save yourself a lot of hassle if you took notice of the advice given
temp internet files are not worth worrying about, delete them automatically, in the browser settings (ie, tools, internet options, advanced) or with ccleaner set to run at boot (untick delete windows log files), or move the folder in IE, tools, internet options, browsing history, settings to c:\windows\temp!!
