confusion re eon meter readings/can't establish usage or get meter reader to turn up

  • Off peak rates for the SP-Boro are 0100 to 0800 at the moment, they change in the summer to 1200 to 0700. These times are hard wired directly to your water and storage heaters so there's nothing you should be doing, and no way you could change anything even if you wanted to. That's one very old antiquated Horstmann meter.

The right hand knob on the storage radiator is the 'damper' it opens and closes a lid on the heat to allow more or less of the heat-store out. The left hand knob tells the heater how much to store in the first place. 1 is very little 7 is maximum. The right hand knob on the storage radiator should always be off or minimum while you are in bed or out of the dwelling.

If you have mobility problems you should register with their 'priority services register' this will facilitate :

    - Password protection schemes and identity cards
    - Quarterly meter readings so you don't get estimated bills
    - Annual gas safety checks
    - Your meter moved so it's easier to get to

Ask Malc to get you Priority Service Registered or ring this freephone : 0800 051 1480.

Thank you so much Richie ... really appreciate. Great to know the hours and how to use the meters. Have just turned all the right hand knobs down, and understand now to let that stored heat release when needed. Thanks so much for letting me know about the priority services register!, as I really do need that help very much. :-)

    Hi,

what type of heaters do you have?

Don't want to confuse things, but on my Dimplex heaters the input is the right control and output/boost is the left control, they should be marked.

Thanks so much frugalmacdugal, and for the illustration :-) Mine are marked as auto-set control on the right, and room temperature on the left. Model 79161.

So, right for input, left for output/boost/damper.

If I'm understanding correctly, it seems to be the opposite of your controls.

In the earlier models they had a resistance wire that closed the damper blade if the knob had been left above its minimum setting, the later ones had a hydraulic system on the damper blade governed by the bi-metal strip. Either way at around 35 years old the MSE prudent thing to do would be to close it yourself. Any fully charged heater should always have the damper blade closed irrespective of its knob setting, what was a good seal 35 years ago with ± 1mm rocking will because of the counter balance weights almost certainly not be so after its first winter.

Thanks Malc :-) Great to know more about the meter, and thank you for listing what the 4 readings are about especially. Yes, never touched the boost button. Thankfully heaters give off a lot of heat, so it's been about setting them low enough.

It is difficult for me to take the readings myself, which is why I was so disappointed the meter reading wasn't done. You're being great, but I am a little wary that dealing with the faceless side of Eon might mean another meter reading appointment not being kept. Puzzles me why meters are set so low down/awkward to read, and I've signed up to register interest in the smart meter, crossing fingers about that being able to happen sooner rather than later.

That will be great to know what times the off peak rates are active. Thank you very much.

    Hi Cat

Glad the information I posted earlier was useful.

I agree with Richie. Certainly sounds as though you need to be on the Priority Services Register. This will give you access to a number of services as Richie outlined. I can do this for you or you can call the number Richie posted. This is our Caring Energy team.

With moving the meter, we can only arrange moves over a very small distance. A few inches only. This may not be sufficient for your needs.

Moves over a larger distance are done by the electricity distributor for the region. Your distributor is the Northern Powergrid. Contact details are on your bills and you'll need to ask for a Service Alteration.

Our Caring Energy team will, though, be happy to assess your particular circumstances and, if eligible and the move is possible, help to make it happen.

Once on the Priority Services Register, we can set up a special arrangement to make sure we read the meter each quarter. Our Caring Energy team will liaise with you to agree mutually convenient dates and times.

I do understand your previous experience with a meter reader wasn't too encouraging but am sure we can improve on this.

We're continuing to roll out Smart Meters and will be in touch now you've registered your interest. Not sure about time scales as there's a bit of a backlog at the moment.

    Hope this helps Cat.

Thanks frugalmacdugal. Sorry if I'm getting a bit confused; so left is amount to store, and right is the 'release what is stored'? (and the lower this right hand knob is the slower the release is over the day?)

awesome stuff :-) Getting a bit confused ... right hand knob on a very low setting means heat releases slowly over the day? These pigging heaters have been driving me nuts, lol ... Erimus hope there are funds to change 24 of us over in April, but it could be 2 years. grrr.

Thanks so much again Malc :-) Great news. Very reassuring information, and am very thankful that the facility exists.

I went ahead and called them and they were really nice ... arranged an appointment on the 11th for meter reading, having now put me onto the special needs quarterly system. I'd only been on the 'call if there's going to be a problem locally' system, but everything's fixed right now thankfully. He explained about that they call any time they see an estimated bill on the system. I didn't ask about the meter being moved, as I felt much more confident about the meter being read, plus understand the Smart Meters are on their way at some point ... realise that may not be soon, but feel so much better about the meter readings happening. Thanks :-)
