Might be worth contacting your local carers support centre, could be helpful for your mother and they will usually help with forms etc too
One day I might be more organised...........

My father had a bad stroke in November 2005. Similar to you step dad, his right side is practically useless. He gets attendance allownace at the higher rate and has carers coming in 4 times a day to see to him. If you dad needs a similar amount of care then he should qualify for high rate DLA plus the mobillity side, this isnt availabe for my dad as he was 75 when he had the stroke. He was also in hospital for just under 12 months and has community physio coming in twice a week plus he pays for 2 private sessions twice a week. Its slow progress and very frustrating for the stroke victim. The OT's and physio at the hospital will be able to help filling the forms in as my sis in law dealt with all my dads and she was given reports to send in with the application forms. Good luck.

First of all I would like to apologise to changkra as I have only just seen your reply to this thread - Thank you for your input :D

Anyhoo, my mum has been for a rare during-the-day visit today and spoken to physio's and his consultant. Everyone is over the moon with him and his sheer determination and only today HE STOOD UP ON HIS OWN without any help from the machine or staff :T:T:T:T

He will be in for at least another 6 weeks so that at least buys my mum some time to sort things and give him further intensive physio.

She has started to apply for council houses but still needs her bum kicking to get extra info from his medical team. I have told her she must get the house on the market ASAP so that all in all their transition back up north can be as easy as possible for them both.

Someone however has told her he cannot apply for DLA whilst in hospital - now I know that this was my original question but please can I just double check that this is NOT the case.

    Thanks to all again :A

He can apply whilst he's still in hospital and, if awarded, will recieve the mobility rate whilst still in there. The care rate won't be paid whilst he's in hospital (if he's in an NHS hospital) although if he's allowed to come home for a few days before being fully discharged they will pay for the days he's at home, just let them know when and for how long he spends at home.

Thanks Chameleon - I did think that he could - I will let her know and find out who has told her wrong -

Just a quick update if anyone is interested.

There is talk of my step dad coming home soon  and the house went on the market on Saturday.

The main car is sold and cheque is in the bank.

DLA is applied for and obligitory *if you dont here in 8 weeks* letter has been recieved.

Probably the best news is that today their status on the council has been moved to Priority Ex

fingers crossed that this is the start of everything knitting together nicely.

  • Hi,

I have only just discovered this thread.

Just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear the bad news about the circumstances but I am pleased to hear that things are improving.

Great news.........:j - but make sure you or mum phone the council regularly to *pester* them - and send in any extra medical information that may come your way - even on priority you need to push them up that list as quickly as possible.

Thanks Lin - not sure if our council works differently to others but you actually go onto their website and *bid* on the properties that you are interested in <up to 3 a week> so you dont get offered something you want to turn down.
There is nothing really this week but I know Rome wasnt built in a day - hopefully soon something will come up
