explaining dismissal to new employer

  • It really depends on a lot of different factors regarding the best way forward with it. Like what you did, what line of work you were in and what your going for now etc and who the employer is and what you feel comfortable with.
Unless you say really , its very difficult to help you any further.
  • I'm just a little wary of saying too much and his company finding out that we've been talking about it.
It's breach of confidentiality in a trusted (but non-public service) environment. He would be looking at a complete career change to a driving job.

  • Do you say that you felt it was unjust, or just that you've learnt from it and moved on?

Never say it was unjustified unless you've won an appeal or have won at tribunal.
Say you learn a lot from your mistake/error/lapse of judgement, a painful but ultimately useful learning experience, and be specific about what you learnt.
  • Looking more likely that this will happen. He's obviously applying elsewhere, but everything seems to require satisfactory references, and his will be left due to dismissal for gross misconduct. Any ideas for how to help him find another job?

    What was the issue?

Gross misconduct covers a whole raft of issues from, say, breach of confidence, to bullying, to theft etc.

Without more information it is hard to say.

Breach of confidentiality by seeing and using client's confidential code for internet router

What does that actually mean exactly?

How did he obtain the code?

What legitimate use did he have for the code?

Was he using own equipment in his own time to access a router for his own purposes? If so, why? Shopping, general browsing?

Or did he use the client's systems?

It is a confidential system? Was this considered a breach of security?

The what, when, how and why are very important to how an offence will be viewed by any future employer.

  • He was a security contractor. He saw the clients WiFi code on their desk and used it to watch netflix from his iPad on nightshifts. They aren't supposed to know the code.

So, he used the code to access their Wi-Fi to watch films when he was being paid to work?

Is it supposed to be a 'secure' system?

    How did they find out?
    :hello:
  • Be honest. Don't end on the negative note and don't start on it either.

You need to identify in a very brief sentence what you have learnt from it, how regretful you are and that it's a lesson learnt.

Also ask them if THEY have any questions they would like to ask about the dismissal, and answer them honestly without blaming anybody else.

If they see your not taking the blame and not admitting your mistakes it won't go well.
