Plug in steamer versus on the hob steamer

Hi!
Can anyone help? I'm trying to find out if a plug in electric veg steamer costs less to run than a steamer cooked on either gas or electric hob. I'm looking at steamers and none seem to mention how many watts- thanks in advance! :)

  • I used electric steamers for about 15 years. As easy as it is I prefer food from the one you use over a gas hob.

I decided to change from the electric one to gas as I live in France and the electricity (EDF!) is very expensive, I get through 3 gas bottles a year for my hob which is about £60. I cannot honestly give you a comparison for the best price, but I am so much happier with what I have now.
  • I have the one you use over the hob. The ones I bought came with a base pot, two steam level pots and a lid. I bought 2 so I can have up to 4 levels on the go. Whilst I can't give you a cost comparison I'm pretty sure this saves me money as I can cook 5 levels at once. I normally stick potatoes in the bottom and veg, fish etc on the top.

  • I have an electric steamer, but for cheapness I would go with cold water steralising. A pack of 60 ish tablets from boots at about £1 a pack and one tablet a day makes sense. I used it to start with and was happy with it, but was bought an electric one and seems rude not to use it but will go back eventually no doubt.

Freestanding electric steamer with stainless steel bases is our choice! Cooks brilliantly and easy to clean - much prefer to the overpan ones. No idea on running costs but not enough to make a difference!

Electric steamer for me. It's brilliant. Easy to clean. It means on days like today I'm not struggling for space on the hob. It has a timer and I usually Cook potatoes in bottom one and other veg in the other 2 layers.
I've had my steamer for about 16 years and I love it. No idea on cost either.

I gave my electric steamer away too faffy for me, I have had a 3 tier steamer for 20 plus years we use it daily I think it is much cheaper to run than the electric one was.

I've had both, electric steamer as a wedding present, just as it 'died' won a hob one in a raffle and when we changed oven this year to an induction one wasn't suitable and friend gave me another electrical one.

There's nothing between them for how they cook. The hob one we found it easier to burn food, which we did with cabbage- twice! As we hadn't put enough water in it.

We thought the electrical one had stopped working today- then Mr S spotted it hadn't been plugged in - whoops! That's probably easier to notice on a hob one.

Hob one was a little smaller to store.
