Don't mean to be nudging you here, but pre-Christmas is one of the boom times for selling middle-aged cars. Others old faithfuls are becoming hard to start in the colder weather, promised trips to family and friends all over the country are coming up and a loved, fwd oil-burner is just the ticket.
  • If you got it insured and taxed, declaring say 1000 miles max, how much would it cost to keep it running?

Use it at the weekends only.

We have an old Mk1 MX5 in the garage, which does about 3000 miles a year and costs about £10 a week (Tax insurance MOT and repairs) to keep (1 costa coffee per working day, is how I justify it......)

No idea what it would cost....i was paying about 250 insurance a year, 45 MOT, about 180ish (i think) road tax, repairs were nothing if im honest - it was very good in that sense...so it would be around 10 per week....

But really do NOT need it...so have cancelled everything...Road TAX and Insurance.

And to be fair 2 tyres needed changing anyway...so might just leave it where ot is for now till i decide, if im selling or not.

cheapest mileage is 7000-8000, less than that and it gets more expensive.

Of coruse you have to declare your true mileage and not just pick any number that you deem to be the most "optimal". Insurers can probably read your mileage from your MOT reports in the event of fraud investigation or just due diligence.

Surely there's no issue with over-declaring mileage?

Insurance will look for ANY reason not to pay...

We've had a car parked up now for nearly 3 years. It's an old car (a classic if you will), albeit not a diesel. We start it every so often, drive it forward slightly, reverse it slightly and then leave it to idle for half an hour. Still starts first time.

I believe you declare "Up to x,000 miles", so you should be fine.

I didnt read all the answers. My car has been sitting in my garage for years. You have to move the car a little bit to stop the tyres blowing.Sure someone has mentioned to keep handbrake off and of course you battery will go flat.
Mines in garage as cant bear to sell it . Its hardly worth anything now but is a cabriolet car and still in same condition as it was when i stored it in my garage.

Cant see any reason to keep it. Sell it put money in isa, gain next to no interest then buy another car when you need to.
