Sillygoose - thanks for the correction on the thickness (tablets and my post), but look at the photos - that thing LOOKS thicker than the Hudl, fatter edges, more like a laptop.
The Hudl has a random unknown 1.5Ghz quad core processor. This tablet has a random unknown 1Ghz processor. I'll bet YOU don't know which one is better, or what PowerVR dual core graphics is - but I'll also bet that the Hudl has a better processor, and better graphics, than that one.
Hudl has twice the storage, higher resolution screen, 9 hour battery life quoted (not the 6 you guessed) and the both have MicroSD.
I don't own a Hudl, and I'm no fan of Tesco. I think that £60 for the Hudl is better than this. I think that £120 for the Hudl is better than this. I think that £100 or £120 for a 2012 Nexus 7 (yes, I've used one) is better than this.

    True, photos can be deceiving.

The HUDL is also 30% heavier than the Lidl as its made of thicker weaker plastic instead of Aluminium.

Actually I do know about the processors, its an A7 (not unknown.) Yes the HUDL does have a better processor (its an A9 about 20% faster) and certainly a better graphics processor but - it costs more - my point is not which is the better tablet, its is the Lidl one any good in its own right at its price? and I think its pretty good.
No dispute the more expensive HUDL is better and I agree! but I could also find you a £200 tablet that is better than a HUDL. That's not the question.

Tests have been done and streaming video on high brightness will see 5-6 hours from a HUDL so not a guess, its still very good if you need to watch a tablet that long without a charge, but then the big battery means its also a relatively heavy tablet.. swings and roundabouts!

I wouldn't, not when there are better, decent brand-names for not much more.

If you have an Asda near you then they have a 9" Tablet that will be hugely reduced in the Black Friday Sale which starts at 8am tomorrow.

It's not just the speed of the processor, it'll be the efficiency, meaning faster AND better battery life, and even less heat.
And I'm also not saying the more expensive (£60 remember!) tablet is just better, I'm saying it's better VALUE - in my opinion.
I can't see where it says that tablet has an aluminium back, but if it does, that's really a premium thing that's wasted at this price point IMO.
I would also say that you're likely to get more support on the Hudl, and more likely to be kept up to date on it officially.

Are all these cheap tablets going to be supported by their manufacturers? I see the Aldi one comes with 4.2.2 even though 4.3 and KitKat has already been released so this is already two versions too old.

And isn't Bluetooth 2.1 ancient now?

According to the blurb it has a 'razor-sharp multi-touch display for a fantastic multi media experience'.

    So that's what 1024 x 600 is lol.. I wouldn't touch that tablet with a barge pole, and it's not worth £80.

If you want to keep the budget down its a perfectly good buy

When buying a non-brand tablet, what's the minimum spec I should be looking for.

My FIL is in the early stages of alzheimer's, I was thinking of buying a cheap 10” tablet he can use for some brain teasing exercises.

I've looked on EBay at some used / reconditioned ones, but don't really know what to avoid.

Budget would be around £100.00 or under.
