The best phone at £300 is the Nexus 5 by a long way. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

The Sony Xperia Z has come down to £340 on Amazon, however, I have a Nexus 5 and find it very good aside from battery life which I find good but not exceptional.
In terms of performance it is excellent and have no regrets buying it.0 -
£300 Android phone? As stated before, it's an absolute no brainer - Nexus 5 every time. But it's also a sobering thought that should Tesco get any more in stock you could buy the Motorola Moto G (Motorola are wholly owned by Google now) AND a Nexus 7 for the price of the Nexus 5 alone.0

As above, possibly look at the Moto G (in benchmarks the Nexus 5 beats it hands down but in daily life the Moto G has been reviewed as being very fast including 3D gaming).0

Moto G back in stock at Tesco today, 8GB for £99 and 16GB for £129, ordered one this morning on Tesco Direct. Great reviews.0

Be very careful with Motorola phones.
First: unlike Nexus phones which can receive updates for at least 18 months, support window for Motorola phones is quite short. Not as ridiculously short as Sony, but can be painful.
Second: all Motorola phones have locked bootloaders. It means the access to 3rd party updates is very limited ad much more tricky than in other phones.
There's more: Nexus is provider-independent. No mobile network crapware, so no need to wait for update. Most of the Motorola phones are network branded. And so on..
Last but not leas: last year Nexus 4 is still much better phone than Moto G. Better camera, better screen, better pretty much everything. And you can find it in roughly same price.0 -

Google own all or a large part of Motorola now. I would expect these phones to be well supported0 -

Google purchased Motorola last year, half year before releasing Nexus 4. 4, not 5.
And still releasing their flagship with LG, and still - nothing changed in terms of support.
Is there any other reason why makes your expectations legit?0
