Assessment for spending council money
How much have we got?
How much is left?
What friends/relatives are involved?
Spend it.....
I wish our councils would start to ask;
Do we need to spend this money at all.
Does it fit in with any strategic objective (assuming they have some).
Does it present tangible value for money.
and
Do we need this service;
Do we need this department;
Why are we financing any peripheral groups? Seriously!!
By the way a big vote of approval on the staff at the recycling centre at Islandmagee, well run, hard working and help people. Larne Council got it right there. Staff couldn't be better. Excellent especially when compared to the likes of the centre run by Carrick of the Marshallstown Road or Belfast Council's at Alexander Park Avenue.[STRIKE]Less is more.[/STRIKE] No less is Less.0 -

The old cliche - "Money's no object, as long as it's somebody else's"“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
If this was some sort of giant temporary structure made of blow-up plastic like a bouncy castle and there for the day of the Jubilee and taken down the next day then it might be understandable at a stretch.
Why is it still there?
Maybe Liberace's ghost is playing a concert in the town.0 -

I think it's still there because Larne council is UUP dominated. Sinn Fein just as predictably said any symbols put on roundabouts should be "more inclusive". In this case I'm in agreement with Sinn Fein. Larne council thought it was a good idea to use it to celebrate the Golden Jubilee and that's certainly fair enough but to keep it up long after the celebrations are over makes me think the council is now being provocative and sectarian.
The council says it is helping tourism and many people are coming to Larne just to see the crown and that there's a shopping spin-off. If that's true then fair enough, but those of us who know Larne will have doubts because there's nothing in the place and it's a nightmare to navigate around.
My opinion would be, unless there's solid proof that it's really boosting shopping and tourism - get it down. It's not helping community relations. How the hell are we going to reintegrate society if councils continue to do stupid things like this, and waste ratepayers money to prove how British they are?0 -
If this was in any small town in the UK, it would still be hideous piece of kitsch.
Maybe if this thread was one the MSE discussion forum we would find out what the rest of UK thought about it0 -

I agree with you. It would be hideous no matter where it was.
Perhaps other MSE'ers would be interested but when we start threads on local issues on the NI forum we usually leave it up to admin to decide if it warrants being moved to DT. Sometimes when that happens however our parochial sentiments don't transfer well and the thread quickly dies. A lot of GB members don't, or even want to, understand NI issues.
Notwithstanding that if you think it warrants being moved then you can make a request to admin.0 -
lol. a thread about lack of accountability, waste of money and an eyesore... and irony, who is the crown for...The British Royal family! so really it a perfectly apt tribute0
